And that first night was with him.

The thought was deeply satisfying, but more than that, it also made something inside him...soften. It was a disturbing realization, and for one moment, the prince found himself considering pushing her away just as he had before—-

Get out.

Get the fuck out—-

But then the prince caught sight of Fawn gazing at him searchingly, her uncertainty evident on her pale face, and he heard himself say, “Come here, Fawn.”

Relief flashed in her eyes, and the sight of it created a curious ache in his chest. He watched her hurry to him just like a young awkward fawn, and when she reached his side, she came to an abrupt clumsy stop, eyes wide, as if unsure of where to place herself.

Another sigh escaped the prince, but it was more irritated this time. He could feel his men’s interested gazes turning towards him, and he knew exactly what they were thinking.

What they were talking about was stuff that he didn’t even let his own friends hear of, and yet-—

What fucking choice did he have?

He yanked her down, making her sit next to him, and turning to his men, who were openly smirking, he snapped, “Stop looking at me like that if you don’t want to be fired in the next second.”

Fawn gasped. “Prince!”

But Noah and Igor didn’t seem to mind. “Yes, sir,” the two said politely, and since they were no longer allowed to smirk, they laughed instead.

He scowled at Fawn. This was all her fault. Why must she constantly make him do such embarrassing things?

Seeing the look of irritation on the prince’s gorgeous face, Fawn protested, “What did I do?”

“Causing trouble,” the prince muttered, “like you always do.” He turned back to his men. “How many girls to teach a lesson to?”

When Fawn gradually came to understand what they were talking about, worry filled her, and she couldn’t stop herself from gnawing on her lip. She knew she had no right to interfere, and yet—-

“Because of the number of men we had to leave behind at the compound, we’re a bit shorthanded now,” Noah was saying. “I can take the lead for Girl #1, Igor on the second, but the third...”

The prince started to speak.

“Can’t you skip this?” Fawn blurted out.

The prince slowly turned towards her.

Uh oh. Had she just butted her head in where it didn’t belong? But if she hadn’t, it would mean the prince getting involved, and she really didn’t think it was right.

Seeing that the prince was waiting her to speak, she stammered, “Why not d-delegate? You must be tired, after...stuff.”

The prince glared at Fawn. Did she realize she was practically insinuating he could only do one round of sex?

Noah and Igor were nodding in sympathy. “That’s right, sir. If signorina thinks you’re tired, then, of course—-”

“One more word, and I’ll kill you.”

The two shut up, but they also started smirking silently at the same time.

Fuck.

He looked at Fawn again, saying flatly, “I have no choice. I can’t just set this aside—-”

“I’m not asking you to set it aside for me,” she said in a small voice. “I was just thinking that with your problem with Davos, that should be darkness enough for you to handle. I don’t think you need to be personally involved in another person’s nightmare.”

Ah.

The prince murmured to Igor and Noah in Greek, and when the two nodded and turned around to leave, he saw Fawn gaping at him. The door closed behind his men, and he demanded, “What are you looking at me like that for?”

“D-does that mean you’re not going to leave?” she asked unevenly.

He looked at her incredulously. “Wasn’t that what you asked for?”

A nervous laugh escaped her. “I did, I just didn’t expect you to—-oh!” Running out of words to express her shock, relief, and joy, she simply let her instincts take over and threw herself at the prince.

He caught her with a grunt, but as he pulled her tightly against him, she could feel him smile against her hair even as he muttered, “You’re an idiot.”

She grinned crazily, and tightening her arms around his neck, she mumbled, “But you like this idiot.”

The prince chuckled, the dark sound making a sensual shiver run down her spine. Pulling away, he stared into her eyes—-

She held her breath.

“Let’s go back to bed.” The prince lifted her up in his arms and began walking back to the bedroom.

And just like that, the moment was lost.

Did he think she was that much an idiot, she wondered, or did he simply think she had no right to ask?

In all the times they had been together, he had never once kissed her on her lips.

Never.

When they made it to the bedroom, the prince divested them both of their clothes before laying her down on the bed. Noticing the lines on her forehead, the prince frowned as well, asking, “What are you thinking about?”
