The rip-roaring fight she’d had with her daughter late last night or early this morning rather after the girl came back from running away had only added to her stress. She still had no idea where the girl had run off to and didn’t really care; truth be told, she just needed to be in control of everything that was going on around her now when it seems like her house of cards was literally falling down around her.

She was biting into her nails once again when she heard what sounded like a car engine pulling onto the short driveway outside. Her limbs shook as she made her way towards the window to peep outside, and she grew faint when she saw the police car outside. By the time the detective climbed out of the other car that pulled up to the sidewalk, she could feel the scream building inside her.

Connie had been avoiding her mother all morning, not wanting to see the other woman. After returning home from her earlier escape, she’s been out of sorts. The night hadn’t gone the way she’d expected; she hadn’t gotten the same rush she usually did after peeping into her dad’s life from the outside. Instead, she’d walked away feeling sad and alone.

For the first time in a very long time, her situation was brought home to her. The fact that she was unwanted by all of the adults in her life had finally hit home, and she finally let go of the dream of one day being part of a family that loved and cherished her.

She was mad at her mom, her dad, and the man who refused to be her stepdad, but as she laid in bed once again listening to the sounds of her mom pacing beyond her bedroom door, she was mad at herself. Maybe this is why no one liked her; maybe they can all see something about her that makes them feel that way make them not want her.

She was feeling sorry for herself when she heard what she thought were sounds of distress coming from her mom. Leaving the bed in confusion, she opened the door in time to see her mother running back to her bedroom before slamming the door and locking it with a loud click. Her attention was drawn to the knock on the door, taking it away from the closed bedroom door as she made her way to the other.

Her knees almost buckled when she saw the cops standing there, and her vision blurred when she saw the knowing look on the detective’s face. “Is your mother at home?” It took a second for the question to register and another for her to find her voice. When she did answer, it came out tinny and thin and not at all like herself.

“She’s… she just went to her room.” Connie pointed in the direction of the bedroom and stepped aside, letting the two uniform officers past her and enter the house. She was just coming to the realization that the cops were here for her mom and not her, just starting to breathe easy again before the detective spoke.

She was barely aware of the raised voices behind her or the sound of the door being broken down. She vaguely registered the words arrest and murder because her entire focus was on what the detective was saying to her. “I have to take you downtown, Connie. I know your grandma is in hospice but do you have anyone else you can call?”

“I don’t…why, why are you taking me?” Connie watched in horror as her mom was led out of the house, kicking and screaming. None of it seemed real, she couldn’t quite get a firm grip on reality, and everything seemed to be moving too fast. “What’s going on?”

“We need to question you about the messages you sent to Marissa.” Connie’s knees gave out, and she almost crumpled to the floor at Detective Sparks’ words. She opened her mouth to speak, to explain, but no sound came. Detective Sparks felt sorry for the young girl, but there wasn’t much she could do. Sure there was no law on the books that directly covered what she’d done, but a man’s life had been almost destroyed, and some answers were needed.

“Come with me.” Detective Sparks took the young girl by the elbow and led her out to her car. The patrol officers had already placed her mother in the back of the squad car. Connie felt only slightly relieved by the fact that they hadn’t cuffed her like they’d done to her mother. Murder? Who had been murdered?

James Wyatt was going about his life, not caring one way or the other about what was going on in Misty or her daughter’s life. Though the old rumors had started resurfacing, he chose to ignore them since nothing had changed for him where that whole thing was concerned.
