I quickly made my exit, calling Honey from the car to let her know that I had to leave.
I ran into the Sheriff who I questioned about the photo. He will make the complaint as soon as possible, but the cleanup is the priority since the holding cell is flooded too. “Thanks. I don’t trust Samuels. They were in Honey’s shed, but we have no idea when that picture was taken unless you can get the digital forensics off it.”
“No one trusts that rat. We just don’t speak of it. I just now have something on that slick fucker after all these years, but you better be careful. He’s been after Honey for a long time, and he already doesn’t like you.”
“What do you mean after Honey?”
“Well, I just thought it was a harmless interest. A crush at best, but I noticed him around her building when she wasn’t home last week. I asked him what he was doing, and he was saying she asked him to check in on things.”
“Thank you.” I’m going to find her asshole brother right now. He has to know what a scumbag Samuels is and yet he let that bastard near his sister.
I see him talking to his assistant and then she storms away in a huff. He’s about to reach for her when I yank his arm away. “Whatever that shit is, it can wait.”
“You,” he snarls.
“If you hit me, you better make it count because I told your sister I wouldn’t start a fight, but I sure as fuck would finish it, and the way I’m feeling it will be a good one.”
“What the fuck is your problem?”
“What kind of brother would let Samuels get close to his sister?”
“Are you still on that bullshit? Aren’t you with my sister?”
“Yes, but that’s not the point. The man is a piece of shit. You were supposed to be protecting her.”
“For a man who everyone knows is obsessed with my sister you should have cared enough to see who she was or wasn’t dating, but you were MIA for the past week.”
“Wait…”
“Look, I lied about Samuels because I wanted to see you react. You’ve been pussyfooting around with your feelings for my sister. Fuck, everyone in town knows about your feelings for my sister except her.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, if I wasn’t so busy and I didn’t think you were a prick, I would have already done it myself.”
“Well, that Samuels shit was a low blow.”
“It caused you to react.” He preens proudly and I want to kick him. One of these days we’re going to have to go toe-to-toe.
“Actually, the storm did, but I was already caving anyway. Besides, we need to deal with Samuels.” I explained the information I had learned from the Sheriff and the confrontation I had with Samuels at my house. By the time we were done, I had him fired up and ready to attack Samuels himself.
“Let’s save this shit for later. I’m going to check in on Honey and then we need to get down to the town’s rebuild.”
“Yes, especially Honey’s shop. She’s going to be devastated about the damage. Hers received the most problems. A water main busted outside, adding to the flooding inside.”
“Shit. Okay. Well, give me a minute.”
I step away from Brooks who immediately goes over to where his assistant is talking to one of the line workers. From the posturing, I don’t need to know what’s going on, but I need to end the call so I can stop my future brother-in-law from destroying his future.
“Hey, baby girl, I can’t talk long, but I’m going to be home a little late. Things are busy here. I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
“Yes, I’m fine. Who was here earlier? I could have sworn it was Max.”
“Don’t say his name ever again.”
“Axel, are you jealous?”
“No, I’m possessive. I don’t like filth coming out of your mouth unless it’s dirty talk in bed. And don’t even think of saying that piece of shit’s name in bed either, because I’ll rip his balls off.”
“Calm down. I would never. Besides, I was glad I thought it was him because I would have been jealous if you cut out after a woman had just shown up.”
“There’s no other one. Only you, baby girl. Now, don’t answer the door for anyone. Keep your pretty ass in the house. Right now people get crazy when storms leave them with very little. We’re taking care of those in need when we can, but there are people not even involved looking to take advantage of others.”
“Well, wouldn’t I be safer with you?”
“Maybe you’re right, but there are a bunch of workers around here and you’re too fucking hot. I might rip their eyes out and then they can’t do their jobs.”
“Hey, just because you ate me out doesn’t mean you own me,” a woman shouts behind me. Fuck, I know who that is.
