She smiles and nods, looking back at that door. “I will as soon as we take care of the town.”
I’m not sure what their relationship is, but it’s complicated. It has to do with her father or something that he did a favor for a long time ago. “You don’t owe that jerk anything.”
“Don’t let Mayor Payne bother you.” She grabs hold of my shoulder, giving it a squeeze just as the door to the jerk’s office opens. We turned and the expression on his face almost made me want to kiss her. Of course not in an intimate way, that’s reserved for my Honey, but damn, I’ll have to send her a gift at the very least.
“What the hell is going on?” he snarls, venom practically falling from his lips, making my day.
“Mind your business, Mayor. Don’t you have a hurricane to worry about?” I answer, egging the bastard on. After all, the bastard enjoyed rubbing Samuels in my face.
“Yes, so I’d expect you to keep your grubby paws off my assistant.” Grubby? I could buy this entire damn bay and then some, but all I want is one little woman and maybe a house full of little ones who look like a combination of the both of us.
“I don’t have any hands on your assistant.” I turn back to her and say, “Thanks.” With a wink, I walk away.
It’s time to get Honey and make sure she never fucking sees Max Samuels ever again. I hop in my work truck and fly down the road to Honey’s shop, which isn’t too far from the Mayor’s office. The weather has already shifted and the midday sky has darkened. The stormy clouds have moved in fast.
When I pull up to the block on Main Street, I’m in for a shock. This time, I spot a light on and her fucking car parked right out front. Damn, that woman is hardheaded and foolish. What could she possibly be doing inside? Samuels better not be there. Scanning the area nearby, I didn’t see another car in sight. Since I don’t see his vehicle, I won’t be snapping any necks today, just spanking a cute little bottom after I get us to safety.
Chapter Two
Honey
“Honey, where are you?” the exasperated voice on the other end says. It’s that tone I know so well that I do my best to not hang up because today he’s stressed as hell.
“I’m safely away from danger, of course, Brooks. Where are you? In the thick of it?” I challenged him.
“It’s my damn job as the mayor and as your big brother. I’m just making sure that you got out of town and to safety before it’s too late.” I hear the stress in his voice and guilt fills my soul because he has so much on his plate. He’s been through a lot over the past several years.
“Yes, I did, but they said it’s not even going to hit Sweet Temptation head on.” When I arrived it was a little dreary, but nothing to write home about, so it might be a little bit windy and rainy. These weather people are always wrong. Last week, they said we were going to have a sweltering ninety-degree day completely dry, and it rained and dropped twenty degrees.
“You never know, and you’re my priority.” He’s exasperated with me and I try not to be angry with him.
“Second priority,” I reminded him. He groans on the other end. “Hey, don’t get me wrong. I don’t want to be your priority at all because I’m a grown woman now. Hello, twenty-two and own my own business and everything.” It’s failing, but that’s an entirely different story.
“Just make sure you’re out of town before the storm hits.”
“Relax. What is up your ass? Have you been keeping tabs on me?” I investigated the storefront window, which had suddenly darkened. I’ve almost boxed up all that I can, so I should be out of her in the next half hour. Hopefully, I can get a lot of this in my car, but I’m putting a lot of this on racks in the back.
“I’ve got too much to do to be running down and checking up on you. That’s why I’m asking you to use common sense and stay out of trouble and keep yourself safe.”
“I am safe.”
“You’re lying and besides, you’re not aware of all the dangers that are out there. It’s not just the massive hurricane barreling our way. What about Samuels and Knight?”
“Knight? Like Mr. Knight?” My secret crush? The town’s insanely sophisticated, wealthy, and a wonderful guy who makes me melt every time he stops in.
“Yes, that old prick.” I clench my thighs and then look around the shop as if someone can see me. Luckily, no one was around.
“He’s not that old,” I exclaim, pressing my hand to my chest because anytime I think about the man, my heart does flips like a schoolgirl.
