“Yes, Dario.” He nods and disappears down the hall. There is something on his mind, but I’m not sure what he’d like to discuss. At least he quickly left my woman before she got to ogle him or vice versa, even if he got too close for my liking.

“You like him, don’t you?” I question.

“He’s handsome, but he does scare me,” she says. She looks a bit unnerved—as she should. I want to spank her fucking ass so bad.

A growl accidentally leaves my throat. “I was talking about the fucking cat.”

“Oh, yes, but I can’t have a cat.” She has the decency to actually be ashamed and blush. June takes a step back from me as if I’d actually harm her, and I don’t like it.

Needing to make it right, I soften my expression. “I will keep him in my home. I don’t have dogs. When you have time, you can take care of your pet,” I say, looking at the cute furry guy.

“Are you serious?” She lights up, and I know I’ll keep the furball just so she’ll come to see me.

“Yes.” I’m not sure how to take care of a cat since I don’t have pets, but for her, I’ll figure it out.

We start to move toward the staircase when she freezes. I turn around and grab her elbow. “What are you doing? We need to take him out of here.”

She tilts her head and asks, “But why would you be so nice all of a sudden? Does it have to do with your jealousy over your boss?”

“Fine, don’t bother. Forget I said anything. I’ve changed my mind. Take the little guy back to where he belongs. I have a meeting with the boss that is way more important than dealing with your questions that are completely wrong.” I storm away, annoyed because I don’t know how to answer her questions. I threw out the suggestion without thinking about the consequences or the reasoning.

Turning on my heel, I head to Dario’s office and never look back because I’m afraid I’ll change my mind and give her anything she wants.

The more I picture a life with her, the more I consider all of the reasons I should leave her alone. It’s foolish to have a wife in my world with all the danger it brings. No matter what she means to me, I can’t have June.

My hand raises to knock on the door, but Dario answers first. “Come in, Alessio.”

“You are way too good at that.”

“Your footsteps are distinct. Besides, I was expecting you. Although I didn’t expect you for another half hour since I thought you would have escorted the maid to the estate next door.” He taps his pen on the blotter with a knowing smirk.

“She can handle walking the short distance.”

He shakes his head and laughs. “Bullshit. You know the guards will escort her over. Still, that’s not why I called you in. I have an issue I’d like to address with you that is of a very delicate matter.”

“I’m all ears.” Although frankly, I’m not sure I can pay attention. I can’t stop thinking about June being around other men.

“Stop lying to me. I’d rather you deal with your attraction to the maid first and get you back on track than have you do something stupid.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“I’m not interested in her, so stop looking at me like you’re ready to take me out when my back’s turned. You’ve been my friend since we were children. We’re family. I love you like a brother, and I wouldn’t expect you ever to betray, and I hope that you’d expect the same from me. So tell me, do you have feelings for her?”

“Yes.”

“Then go watch out for her before one of the other guys notices how sweet she is or she notices how handsome and strong they are.” He winks at me.

I snarl and jump out of my chair as he chuckles, rushing out the door to find her before someone else gets to steal her from me. The thought of someone else holding her, kissing her soft lips, or hearing her moans would destroy me. I’d have to kill the bastard for it.

Chapter Ten

June

I can’t figure out what I did to make him upset. Then again, since I met him, Alessio has gone from hot to cold on a dime with me. He has two modes; he’s either nice, or he wants to snarl at me. I can’t tell if he likes me, or if he wishes to never see me again.

Heck, Alessio even bought me two large bottles of my shampoo and conditioner for no reason. It wasn’t his responsibility. I asked him if the boss usually does that for his employees, and he got pissed and said he was just trying to be a considerate host and the boss doesn’t even know my name.
