I sighed and tapped my pen against the notepad in my hand. I looked down at it and realized I’d barely taken any notes. Instead, I’d been scribbling and doodling like a nervous teenager. No woman had ever made me feel so on edge before. Was this something unique to Remy or was it because I actually felt something for this woman?
No, I told myself firmly. I wasn’t allowing my thoughts to go anywhere near that subject. I turned my eyes back to the speaker at the podium and I tried my hardest to pay attention, but it was futile. Memories from last night came rushing back. I remembered how passionate Remy had been in my arms. I was known for having incredible stamina in bed and getting lost in the act of sex, but Remy hadn’t complained. No, Remy had kept up with my sexual prowess and displayed a few skills of her own. It was the best lay I’d had in a long time. I tried not to think about how she might have been the best lay I’d ever had.
It had been difficult to pry myself away that morning. When I woke up, I saw her lying next to me. She was naked and peaceful as she slept, but all I wanted to do was grab her and push deep inside her again. It was bad. I knew better than that and yet, I’d allowed it to happen. I’d even told Remy that I wouldn’t do anything physical with her and yet, here we were. It was all my fault. I had to make sure that I wasn’t tempted again and the best way to do that was to stay away—far away.
So, instead of burying myself inside her again, I’d practically ran to the shower and turned it onto the coldest temperature possible. Once I’d taken the edge off, I found that my mind was still plagued with naughty thoughts. My desire for Remy seemed like it was uncontrollable. The only option I could think of was to make myself scarce. I dressed as quickly as I could and ran down the stairs looking for something, anything, to keep me occupied that wasn’t Remy’s body.
The speaker finished his talk and everyone around me applauded. I could hardly remember what it was supposed to be about and I certainly hadn’t paid any attention. Attendees around me stood and began to leave, but I knew the next presentation I wanted to see was going to be held in the same room, so I stayed put. I buried my head in my notepad and began to write a short to-do list of things that would help me avoid Remy for the rest of the weekend.
Go to the hotel gym, Skype Mom, go for a run, I wrote down with a sigh. It was going to be a long weekend.
“Good morning, stranger,” Kelly called as she approached in a confident strut. Before I even had a chance to reply, she had already taken the seat next to me and smiled over at me expectantly.
“Good morning, Kelly,” I replied in a gruff, irritated voice. I really wasn’t in the mood to jump through any more hoops for her. Not after the disaster with Remy.
“Where is your lovely girlfriend this morning?” she asked with a smile in my direction.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to say. I honestly had no idea where Remy was or what she was doing. The more I dwelled on the subject, the worse I felt about everything and that was doing me no good. I had to think of something to say and fast, before Kelly realized something was up.
I faked a laugh and smiled over at her with tight lips. “Remy prefers to sleep in when she gets the chance,” I lied and shrugged my shoulders. “So, I didn’t disturb her when I woke up and just came down to work. That way she can relax.”
Kelly’s eyes widened by a fraction and she leaned in close to me. “That was very sweet of you, Griff,” she told me as she fluttered her eyelashes. “The more I see of you and Remy, the more I have to admit that you seem like the perfect boyfriend. Remy is a very lucky secretary.”
I was stunned. The way that she looked at me and the tone of her voice made me think she was flirting with me, but that couldn’t be true, surely? My eyes moved over her face, assessing the expression there, but she gave nothing away. She just smiled sweetly at me and shifted a little in her seat. I began to think that maybe I was just imagining it. After all, the whole point of her being here was to make sure my relationship with Remy was strong. She wouldn’t interfere with it… Would she?
