You let yourself fall for your pretend boyfriend, Remy. What are you going to do now?! My mind was racing with thoughts of how to make myself feel better and get over this little crush. It seemed like finding another job was the only solution, but how was I supposed to do that? If I left Enviropak, I’d be leaving Griff to be demoted or worse. I couldn’t do that to such a good man just for my own sake.
Yet, the thought of returning to work tomorrow to be treated as a secretary and not a girlfriend made me want to vomit. Nausea washed over me and I curled up into a small ball on the bed. I wrapped my arms around myself as I cried and tried my best to comfort myself. But it was little use. I was heartbroken and nothing was going to change that.
Nothing.

Much to my delight, Kelly and Isaac had finally left the Seattle branch of Enviropak. It had only taken two more weeks after the conference in Chicago to finally convince Kelly to move on. Isaac had been a great help too and I had no doubt he was hurrying her onward. As I leaned back in my chair, I let out a sigh of relief. It felt nice to be out from under the watchful eye of Kelly and her reports back to Mr. Anderson.
For the first time in a long time, I felt free.
Work, however, was back to being demanding. Since I had spent so much time in meetings with Kelly and Isaac as we helped the company transition, I was behind on my work. Not only that, but I had managed to do far less work in Chicago while we were away. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. I had been enamored by the beauty of my secretary and found myself wiling away valuable hours with her instead of concentrating on my career. That was exactly why I had to nip the whole thing in the bud. I couldn’t lose sight of what was important, especially not during such a rocky time.
I ducked my head down and continued tapping away at my computer. Tomorrow was Thursday which meant it was the deadline for Enviropak to draw up a proposal to try and convince a large manufacturer of frozen dinners to replace their current plastic packaging with our own recycled one. It was a huge contract and something that I couldn’t afford to slack on. If I didn’t get the figures and facts together by tomorrow, there would be hell to pay.
Despite working non-stop all day on the project, by the time four o’clock came around, I still wasn’t done. With a sigh, I poked my head out of my office door and looked around for Remy. She was sat at her desk with her hair tied up into a bun and a serious look on her face as she photocopied documents for tomorrow morning. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her. In spite of my reluctance to venture into a relationship, it was nice to indulge myself in her beauty every now and again.
“Remy?” I called after a few moments.
Her head snapped up and she looked over at me like a deer caught in the headlights. “Yes, sir?” she asked dutifully. I didn’t miss the way her eyes avoided mine, however. Things had been frosty between us to say the least which I supposed was for the best.
“I’m going to be staying late, I’m afraid,” I explained. “I haven’t managed to finish all the necessary preparations for the meeting with Simple Foods for tomorrow. I know we have a meeting in a moment to go over all the details too, so once you’ve been to that, feel free to leave, okay?”
Remy paused for a moment as though she was mulling over my words and then she shook her head. “No, I’ll stay and help.”
I raised my eyebrows at her. “Remy, you really don’t have to do that.”
“Well, if I stay it means we’ll get things down quicker, right? Then we can both go home and I won’t have to deal with you being grumpy tomorrow, deal?” She looked at me with an emotionless expression and I struggled to figure out what was going on in her head, but if she was offering help, I’d be a fool to decline it.
“Okay, fine. If that’s what you want,” I told her with a shrug. “I’ll see you in the conference room when you’re ready for the meeting.”
She nodded at me and I turned to walk along the hall to where I was going to brief the entire team on the proposal for Simple Foods and get some last-minute ideas. Everyone piled in together and Remy brought up the rear end with her friend Shelley. I tried my best to focus on the task at hand, but every now and then my eyes were drawn to Remy. She looked as though she was spacing out which was really unlike her. She was usually very attentive and serious when it came to her work. I couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong.
