“Are you going to tell me what you do?”

“I work for Nox Sawyer.”

“So you went from being a doctor to a businessman?” The only reason that he’d do that is that he needed money fast. Are they having a baby?

“Yes. Why?” I can’t hide my disappointment because she must be pregnant.

“Because it was for the best, Bethany Faith.” I opened up my phone and checked my messages. There’s one from my classmate, Alex. He’s in my last class of the day and asking if I studied for my test next week. I respond that I have because I’m a good girl. He sends a winking smile emoji back and I smile to myself.

Colter looks over, but he can’t see from his angle. His jaw clenches; perhaps it’s because he can’t control my entire day. “So who was that?”

“None of your business.”

“Who was that?” he snarls, pulling over to the side of the road.

“A classmate. Chill out. We have a test coming.”

“Then why didn’t you say that from the beginning?”

“Because it’s not your business and I don’t owe you an explanation about who I message. I thought we established that a long time ago. Hell, we don’t even speak to each other so frankly, what I do with my time or who I speak with is most certainly none of your concern.”

“You’re lucky I have to be in the office today or I’d straighten your ass out really quick, little girl.”

“That’s right. I’m the little girl you feel the need to protect, but I’m not a little girl. I’m an adult and you’re not my keeper, so although I appreciate the ride today, pretend to be my Uber, be quiet and bill me.”

Chapter Two

Colter

She is completely my business. Everything she does is my business and if another man thinks he can get in the way of our future, the fucker will have another thing coming. Her guard will have to step up his game today and work overtime until I can get there and watch who is trying to gain her attention.

If she thinks that I don’t keep tabs on her, she’s sorely mistaken. Yes, it’s taken a little bit of time to afford a personal guard to watch out for her when I’m not around, but there’s always someone there to keep a lookout.

The weather has changed and I can see the snow growing heavier, but I hope it doesn’t get out of control before the day’s out. Even if we couldn’t make it back to Holly Hills, I need her safely back to my condo where she belongs. I steal a glance at her because she’s been quiet for far too long. Her arms are crossed and there’s a slight huff coming from her.

“We’re almost there,” I state, trying to make small talk.

“I’ll be picking you up right after school.” My work schedule has allowed me to be extremely flexible or rather Lennox has allowed me to be flexible. Given his relationship with Celeste and their brief separation, he understood my plight.

“I’m sure I can find a ride home.”

“No, you won’t. I’ll take you home and make sure you’re safe.”

“I don’t need or want an older brother, Colter.”

When we finally approach the school, I scan the area for any meatheads looking to meet with her. So far the coast seems to be clear. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but she’s gorgeous and sexy as hell, even in her winter gear. Even when she’s pissed. “Wrap up.”

She glares at me, reaching behind the seat and snatching her bag. “Maybe you should have thought of that,” she says before jumping out of the vehicle and slamming the door.

“What the fuck does that mean?” I ask, stepping out to ask, but she just storms away. I’m fully dressed in my double breasted peacoat. Still, I hadn’t bundled up because I was in my warm SUV. Was she talking about my coat?

Shaking my head, I see her enter the building without glancing back. Shaking the chill off my bones, I hop back in, annoyed and frustrated with myself for not chasing her down and asking for answers.

Damn, maybe I should have made my move sooner. Have I waited too long? Does she hate me? Did I miss my chance? Am I too late?

No. I refuse to believe it.

Instead, I drove to work with the words Bethany snapped at me playing on repeat in my head.

Maybe I should have thought about that.

“Thought about what? Wrapping up?” Is she talking about my cock? Does she think I got someone pregnant? I shake my head, driving and trying to consider any other reason, but that’s all I got. No. That’s fucking crazy. Where would she get that idea?

I pulled into a parking spot reserved for the firm and headed up to the eleventh floor. Opening the glass doors of Nox Sawyer, I head toward my office. I was almost there when I ran into Lennox. “Hey, what’s wrong? She fight with you?” Lennox knew all about my plan to pick up Bethany today.
