I stared at where I had just been buried, watching as my cum started slipping out of her and trailing down the perfect crease of her ass. I reached out and gathered up all that seed before pushing it back into her with one finger, then adding another, forcing her to get filled up by me all over again.

“There’s nothing hotter than seeing my cum slipping out after I fucked you real good.”

“You’re such a filthy bastard,” she murmured sleepily, and I saw her plush lips form a little smile. “You’re lucky I’m kind of into that.”

Her voice was low, and I sensed her start to go deeper into sleep, and the knowledge that I was the cause of her being utterly exhausted had male pride filling me.

A scowl formed on my face, and I lifted a hand to rub the center of my chest. She was changing me deep inside. I felt it worm its way through me. My heart beat for a very different reason now.

For her.

I gave myself a few more seconds of that internal war, hating and loving that this slip of a female was able to bring me to heel. She was my weakness in every single way.

And as I lay down beside Kayla and she immediately curled her body against mine, I felt that pressure, that pain in the center of my chest increase tenfold.

I held her tightly to me, her head resting on my chest, her even, deep breaths gently moving out of her parted lips across my skin.

The fact that she slept so soundly against me, knowing I’d protect her, kept creating that weird and uncomfortable sensation in my chest. She had my cold heart beating for the first time, it seemed.

Bear had made his way into the room shortly after my female had fallen asleep in my arms and made himself comfortable on the floor at the end of the bed. It seemed the surly, stubborn canine had decided he’d be Kayla’s protector, as well. He’d taken to my sweet little mate instantly, but then again I wasn’t surprised. Kayla had this warmth and innocence that radiated from her.

It made even a coldhearted devil like myself soften.

I told her I didn’t have a heart to give her, no love, none of the affection that was tied to that very human term. And although I was forever devoted to her and only her, I’d never seen myself “falling for her.” It was the simple fact that I’d never seen that as part of what I was capable of, a gentler, human emotion.

But as my chest tightened and warmed, my arms keeping her close, knowing I would level cities, burn down the world for her, I wasn’t certain I couldn’t give her every part of me… like she deserved.

Those feelings, that realization terrified me almost as much as the thought of losing her.

And as the seconds turned into minutes, those turning into hours, I could have stayed like that for an eternity, and it wouldn’t have been long enough.

But when I felt a tightening on the back of my neck, instinct telling me the time had come, I knew I’d be taken from her of my own accord.

My cell phone vibrated, bouncing across my dresser, and I glanced over at it. I didn’t need to look at the screen to know who was on the other end and what they needed to tell me.

I knew the time to leave my mate had come.

Walking away from Kayla felt so wrong that it took everything in me not to turn around and go back to her. In fact, I found myself stopping several times but then forcing my body to keep moving forward, to keep moving away from her.

The sooner I got this shit handled, the sooner I could go back to her.

I didn’t know if the Lycans thought they were going to get some kind of closure heading up to the property in Vermont, but that wasn’t my concern. I would take them there, bring my soldiers for backup, and help them figure shit out. But that was it. If they wanted to try to take shit down tonight, I wouldn't do that, not until everything was in place for Kayla first.

When I stepped off the stairs, I could hear the commotion outside even clearer, the deep male voices arguing, shouting curses, and making demands. I smirked. Wolves weren’t known for their patience.

Hours had passed since I’d dispatched James to call in reinforcements, and when I opened the front door, I could see my soldiers lined up in front of the house, as well as a shitload of very pissed-off Lycans.

Those big, animalistic fuckers were currently letting their inner animals run the show. That much was clear by their glowing eyes and partially shifted forms.
