“You’re mine,” I rumbled when I felt her walls beginning to tighten around me.

She nodded, tears making her blue eyes glassy. “I love you, Remi.”

I kissed her again, moaning into her addictive mouth as we came together.

Remi

“Remi!” Harlan called from outside. “Your girl is here!”

There was no stopping the smile from tilting my lips even if I tried. Selma was the center of my entire universe. My feelings for her hadn’t dimmed at all in the year we’d been together. Instead, they only intensified. My world began and ended with her now, and I knew a life without her would be a miserable one.

She and I had gone through more than most couples did in their first year. It took her a couple of weeks to recover from her concussion enough to edit the photos she took of Bentley’s adoption ceremony. When her father’s court date came up, I was on the bench right behind her as she put him behind bars. He would get out in a couple of years, but there would be a restraining order in place to protect her when that happened.

I quickly set down my hammer and strode outside. She eased out of her new car—one I bought her so she could have something more reliable to drive around in. A blue lunchbox was clutched in her left hand.

“You brought me lunch?” I asked as I made my way over to her. I loved it when she made me lunch, especially since I tended to just go out and buy something.

She nodded. “It’s about time for a lunch break, isn’t it?”

“Adler!” Harlan shouted into the building we were remodeling. “Can we take lunch?”

Adler came out of the building, frowning at Harlan. “You literally just ate your lunch thirty minutes ago because you couldn’t wait.”

Harlan gestured to us, and Adler followed his hand, understanding dawning on his features. “Yeah—lunch sounds good.” I turned to face Selma again as Adler made his way to his truck, no doubt to eat the lunch Cecily made him in peace. Grabbing Selma’s hand in mine, I led her over to a tree and sat down before pulling her down onto my lap.

“What’d you make me?” I asked. I loved her cooking. She was a natural at it, and even Cecily had roped her into handling more complicated dishes because cooking just came so easy to Selma.

Selma unzipped the bag and pulled out a container of roasted chicken, potatoes, and green beans. My stomach growled as I popped the top off and forked a bite into my mouth. “God, this is good,” I groaned. I pressed a kiss to her lips once I’d swallowed my food. “Thank you, baby.”

“You’re welcome.” She began to play with the promise ring on her finger. The blue topaz stone glinted in the sunlight streaming through the trees. I’d made a promise to be with her forever and to one day marry her when we were both ready for that step six months ago. We’d been laying in bed after having some of the best sex we’d had yet, and I’d slipped it on her finger.

Fuck, the way she’d ridden my cock after…

“I actually wanted to come talk to you.”

I gave her my undivided attention. “About?”

“I got hired to do a wedding photoshoot in California.” My eyes widened in surprise. Her business had been taking off lately after Adler sat her down and helped her market her business better. She’d done some flights before for photography, but it was always to the surrounding states—Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina. “I don’t want to fly that far by myself.”

“I’ll go with you,” I told her without hesitation. She was the most important thing in my life. Nothing came before her.

“But you have work—”

I waved her off. We were a little behind, but I also knew Adler would tell me to go with her anyway. California was a long way to go by herself. “I’m going with you, baby. End of discussion.” I smiled at her when her shoulders relaxed. “How does it feel to have a customer across the country?”

She beamed at me. “Incredible,” she confessed. “I never thought my business would expand that far. It feels really good to know that people like my work enough to pay that amount of money.” On top of the wedding package cost, they had to pay for her transportation and hotel as well. But she was incredible with a camera

“I told you to stop doubting yourself.” I arched a brow at her. “You’re good, Selma. Mikayla wouldn’t have hired you if you weren’t the absolute best.”

Selma smiled because she knew that as well. Mikayla and Beau gave Bentley everything they could, and whatever they gave him was the best that could be gotten. They spoiled that boy rotten, but he was thankful for everything they did for him.
