She put it on the kitchen counter behind me and waited just next to me with her hands clasped behind her back, as if she was barely holding herself from snatching it away again.

I raised my eyebrow. ‘Why are you nervous? You already told me about most of them.’

Keeping quiet, she shrugged. ‘I’ll make us coffee.’

Instead of going for the list, I turned around and reached for her hand, pulling her to my front, fitting her against me. I wrapped my arms around her waist and rested my chin on her shoulder. Her body relaxed and I closed my eyes, savouring the feel of her.

She drowned my mind. Whenever I was near her, she made me feel out of my depth.

‘I love this,’ I muttered.

‘What?’ she asked quietly as she tilted her head to rest against mine.

‘This. Having you this close. Being able to touch you like this, finally. We waited years to have this. I’m a lucky bastard to have this second chance with you.’

‘Sounds like our own second chance romance. Are you giving me this cheese because you know it’s working on me?’

I laughed.

She moved in my arms and faced me, so I used the opportunity to pull her closer. My arms still safely around her, I leaned down and rested my temple against hers.

‘I might be a little scared,’ she whispered into our quiet.

I pulled back so I could see her eyes. ‘Scared? Of what?’

‘You. This. Of what’s happening. I’ve had a crush on you before and it didn’t turn out so well. And all of this, you, feels like a dream. I don’t want to wake up from it’

‘I want you, Charlie. I’m ready to do whatever it takes. I can wait if that’s what you want. Anything you want from me, it’s yours.’ I lifted her chin with my finger to catch her gaze. ‘But if it’s up to me, I don’t want to wait. I’d struggle to try and stay away from you.’

She exhaled and I watched her eyes flutter to a close.

‘You really came back for me? Back then, at the diner?’

Her voice was barely audible: it was just the two of us, in our little bubble in her kitchen.

Her list forgotten.

The world forgotten.

‘Yes. A few times. I knew I wouldn’t find you, but I wanted to make su—’

Before the last word was even out of my mouth she lifted her chin up and kissed me. And this time it was me who groaned. Bending a little, I caught her right beneath her butt and smiled into our kiss when she wrapped her arms around my neck and did a little jump into my arms.

After pushing her back against the fridge and kissing the hell out of her lips until I just couldn’t wait any longer, I managed to drag myself away to get some clarity back to think for a second, so our first time wouldn’t be against the fridge. Not that it wouldn’t be amazing. Hell, maybe it was a good idea.

‘Where do you want me?’ I asked into her neck, my voice hoarse and breathless.

‘You don’t want coffee?’

‘I want you. Where do you want me?’

‘In my bed.’

She didn’t hesitate in her answer and it made me smile. In the blink of an eye we were in her bedroom. I didn’t even take a second to look around because I had something more interesting to look at in my arms. I gently lowered her to her feet, her body sliding against mine in a maddening way that left nothing to the imagination about how ready I was for her. The moment her feet hit the ground she pulled my head down for a kiss.

I smiled. My heart was racing. I couldn’t remember the last time my heart had raced because I was about to have sex with someone. Yet there we were.

I was finally going to touch this woman in all the ways I’d wanted to touch her in the last few weeks, and I couldn’t wait a second longer. Reaching down, I started to pull up her dress and stopped kissing her to take it off. She reached for me again, but I took a step back to take it all in.

She was wearing a pale lilac matching set of underwear and she was so fucking beautiful that I didn’t know what to do with her, other than just stare like an idiot. She was absolutely made for me.

I watched as she started blushing. Just a pretty pink at the top of her cheeks. And I smiled because she had no idea what she did to me.

‘I’m speechless,’ I muttered, just to repeat myself, my eyes roaming every inch of her skin.

She swallowed. ‘I’m a little shy…’

‘No. Don’t you even dare finish that sentence, Charlie. You’re absolutely stunning and I don’t even know where to start with you.’
