“What am I going to do, hit you with toilet paper?”
The door opened, and Bradford looked around before stepping in. He immediately walked to the counter and picked up the pregnancy test.
“I…I don’t think it’s ready yet,” I said. “They take a few minutes.”
He stared at it, frowned, then dropped it in the sink. Turning, he took me by the elbow and walked me back toward the bedroom. I surreptitiously looked around the cabin to get my bearings. Aside from the front door, there was a back door as well. My gut churned when I saw what must have been about six locks on the front door, all of them keyed.
I glanced at the large picture window at the front of the cabin. It was pitch dark outside, which meant there was no moon tonight.
What if I pulled out of his grip, ran, and jumped through the window? How badly would I be hurt?
Pushing me into the bedroom, Bradford pointed to the box he’d brought me earlier. “Put it on. Right now.”
Shaking my head, I said, “No.”
His expression was a mixture of bemused and pissed off. “No?”
“No. I’m not going to let this happen. I don’t want to sleep with you. I don’t want you touching me. I swear, I’ll fight you the entire damn time.”
He slowly tilted his head, looking like he was thinking. Finally, he glared at me, eyes glittering. “Then I’ll knock you out and fuck you while you’re sleeping.”
I sucked in a harsh breath. “You really are a sick motherfucker.”
That was apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back. He lunged toward me so fast, I barely managed to grab one of the chairs at the table. He leapt back as I swung it at him.
“Don’t make me hurt you, Morgan. You’ve been blinded by Ryan. You know you want me. I’ve seen the way you look at me.”
“Stay away from me, Rich or Bradford or whoever the hell you are! I don’t want you! I’ve never wanted you. There is only one man I love, and I’ll love him forever! You can rape me a million times, and I will never want you!”
Rage filled his face, and now I prayed to God I hadn’t imagined that there was someone outside the house.
“You did this to yourself,” he growled. “Remember that. We could have had a romantic first night together—but you ruined it with your filthy mouth!”
He tried to grab me, and I swung the chair again. No matter what happened, I was going to put up the fight of my life.
The front door burst open, and the startling sound of gunshots rang through the cabin. I dropped to the ground on instinct, screaming as I covered my head.
Bradford cursed violently, mumbling a question about how anyone had found him so soon. Then he ran out of the bedroom.
Mind racing, I knew I could either stay in the room, away from the gunshots—or I could run toward them.
I jumped to my feet, my decision made.
Men shouted, more shots were fired, and I immediately dropped back to the floor. I crawled toward the bedroom door, praying I didn’t get hit by a stray bullet. I needed to get to a window and break it.
As soon as I had that thought, another occurred to me. What if I couldn’t break the glass?
Then I froze in place and covered my head as I heard Bradford screaming.
“You won’t take either of us alive! I’ll kill her before I let you take her away from me!”
Change of plans. I needed to hide.
The sound of wood splintering into a million pieces caused me to scream again. Looking into the living room, I saw that the front door was missing, though I couldn’t see Bradford or anyone else. If I ran out there now, it was very likely I would be shot in the crossfire.
Suddenly, I saw Bradford dive behind a chair. He had a handgun and kept swinging both the gun and his head back and forth, pointing the weapon at the front door, then the back. A loud thud made him turn toward the back door, where he aimed his gun.
The wailing of sirens in the distance told me the police were on their way. Bradford’s gaze shot straight toward me.
I scrambled backward as he raced toward the bedroom. Before I could even get to my feet, he grabbed my hair and pulled. I screamed and started to struggle, but the more I thrashed, the more my scalp hurt.
He put the gun to the side of my head. “Stand up.”
His cold, hard voice sent chills throughout my body. I stood, and he slowly walked us back into the living room, using my body to cover his own.
“Is this who you want?” he shouted. “Your whore? Your lying little whore?!”
“Bradford—I mean, Rich, please don’t do this!” I begged.
