He paused as headlights flashed and a car drove past.

Why was someone driving past early on a Sunday morning?

Maybe a neighbor who started work early. The security light flashed on as he moved again. He should probably have told Loki that he’d found the bulb broken and replaced it.

Later.

Getting into his truck, he hoped he wouldn’t wake them up as he backed out of the driveway.

He had a lot to think about.

“All right! What are we going for next? The Ferris wheel? Bumper cars? What about some games?” Loki asked.

“No bumper cars,” she said firmly. “I’ll watch you, but I’m not in the mood to go on them.”

Not after seeing the bruising on her chest today. Thank God she’d put her pajamas on last night. She hadn’t wanted to risk another nipple slip in front of Remy.

But it had the added bonus of hiding her bruising from Loki.

She’d woken in the middle of the night with a nightmare. Thankfully, Loki hadn’t woken up. She can’t have made much noise or she’d likely have had Remy storming into her bedroom.

Which would’ve been the last thing she needed.

Two men occupying her room as well as her head. What the fuck was wrong with her?

Although if Brick and Xavier could share Juliet . . .

Oh God. Was her brain really going to go there? Loki didn’t even want her in that way. And Remy seemed way too possessive to share.

She sighed sadly.

“Hey, you all right? Tink?”

“What?” She startled as Loki brought them to a stop, turning her toward him. “What is it? What’s wrong? Did you decide on bumper cars?”

“I think we need a chat.”

Oh crap.

She really didn’t want a ‘chat’.

“Loki, I’m fine.”

He tugged her over to a quieter area of the fair. They’d only been here for a couple of hours, but she was already tired.

Of course, Loki had her going all over the place. He loved fairs. Even if he wasn’t particularly fond of the crowd of people.

Some of his friends waved at them, yelling his name. He waved back.

“You don’t have to stay with me if you’d rather go see them,” she said.

And then she could avoid his chat.

He shot her a look. Right. So it seemed she wasn’t getting out of this. He reached a block wall that formed part of the school fence since the fair was held in the school grounds.

Turning to her, he lifted her onto the wall, then pushed himself between her legs. They were now face-to-face.

Also not good.

She swore that sometimes Loki could see right to the heart of her.

“What’s going on?”

“What do you mean?” she asked, looking everywhere but at him.

“Uh-uh. I know your tricks, missy.” He spoke in a low, firm voice.

Isa had heard that voice before, and it always made her pay attention. Her insides tightened. She wondered what it would be like if he used that voice on her in other ways?

Maybe to order her onto her knees to suck his cock?

What was wrong with her?

Best friend. Best friend. Best friend.

“You’re in your head, Isa.” He tapped her forehead. “You and I both know that’s not always good for you.”

Right . . . because her thoughts tended to spiral. She’d start to think of all the ways she wasn’t good enough.

“I’m all right. I’m not having bad thoughts.”

He eyed her for a long moment. “Then what is going on?”

Isa chewed her lip, uncertain what to tell him.

“It’s about him?” Loki asked.

She breathed out a sigh. “Do you think it was odd he left so early?”

Was Remy upset with her? He hadn’t even left a note.

“No. He probably had things to do back on Sanctuary Ranch.”

Of course. She was likely worried about nothing. But she wondered if he’d changed his mind about wanting to date her. Perhaps it was best if he had.

“Tink, talk to me. Do you . . . do you want to go talk to him?”

“What? Oh no. No.” She really, really didn’t. “I’m sorry I’m so quiet. I’m just tired.”

He frowned, then nodded. “We’ll go home.”

“What? Why?”

“Because you’re tired. You’re working too much lately. That asshole boss is making you work too late.”

“Yeah. I guess that’s it.”

Loki took her hand with his, threading their fingers.

“Nothing else?”

“I just have to tell you something about my car.” She knew she had to, she just didn’t want to upset him.

“What about it?”

“It didn’t exactly break down. I had a minor accident.”

“What? What kind of minor accident?” he demanded. There was a note of panic in his voice.

Shit. This is why she hadn’t wanted to tell him anything.

“Hey, I’m all right. I’m right here. See? I’m fine.” She cupped his face with her hands. “Nothing happened to me. I just ran off the road and scraped the side of my car.”

His breathing grew more rapid. “You could have been seriously hurt.”

“But I wasn’t.” Shit. Her heart was aching for him. She knew this was a trigger for him. The idea of someone else he loved being hurt or killed . . . it was why she never objected when he became overprotective.
