With that, Cindy throws herself into my arms, leaning against my chest while sobbing.
“Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” I ask with agony in my voice while stroking her back. “Why this train of questioning? Is there something from your past that you’ve never told me?”
She sniffles and pulls back for a moment.
“No, everything’s okay. I just had to know more about the man I love because Blake … I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a daddy, so your values are of utmost importance to me. How would I feel if my baby’s father rejected me because of an assault? What would I do, if suddenly I was unclean and impure in your eyes?”
I stare at her fiercely.
“You’re having my child?” is my growl.
“Yes,” she replies with a teary smile. “I’m about ten weeks along. You’re going to be a daddy soon, Blake.”
I crush her to my huge form, but then immediately lighten my hold.
“I’m sorry, honey. I didn’t mean to hold you so fiercely because I don’t want to hurt the baby. But are you serious? I’m going to be a father?”
To my surprise, there are tears in my eyes and suddenly, I’m the one with wet streaks running down to my chin. Cindy smiles gently and wipes my cheek with her soft palm.
“Yes, Blake. You’re going to be a father soon, and I’m so proud to be having your child. You’re a good man. You rescued me in the nick of time from a horrific attack, and said that even if I had been defiled, that it wouldn’t matter. You are the man for me, Blake Reynolds, and I love you more than life itself.”
This seems like the appropriate time to do my own big reveal. Never dropping her eyes, I sink to one knee and reach into my pocket for a velvet jewelry box. Her gasp is immediate as her eyes widen upon seeing the giant diamond solitaire within.
“Cindy Lane,” I intone. “Will you do me the honor of being my wife? I love you so much, and finding out that you’re pregnant has filled me with more joy than I ever thought I’d experience. Please make a poor bastard happy and say yes.”
She sniffles a little even as her blue eyes shine with love.
“Yes, Blake. Yes, I’d love to be your wife. The three of us will be a family, and I’ve never felt so happy before.”
With that our fate is sealed. I rise to take her left hand between my own, and slip the ring onto her finger. The jewel looks right there, as if has always belonged on Cindy’s hand, and then I lean toward her to press a tender kiss to that perfect pink pout.
“You were meant for me, Cindy Lane,” I growl. “You’re my woman.”
She nods with tears in her eyes, one hand reaching up to smooth my rough jaw.
“Yes, I’m your woman Blake, and I’ve always been your woman. Thank you for being there for me today, and now, forever.”
We kiss again, and it’s as if everything in the universe shifts into place. Maybe I met this woman on a blind date, courtesy of my niece. Maybe we did a taboo deed in a darkened movie theater, uncaring of whom we shocked. But all’s well that end’s well, and with my fiancée by my side and a baby in her belly, I can’t wait for the next chapter of my life to begin.
Epilogue
Cindy
A year later.
My gorgeous wife moans long and low as she kneels before me.
“Just like that, Blake. Ooooh, yes. Right there.”
I know what she wants because the truth is that I want it too. After Cindy got pregnant, we re-visited our conversation about birth control.
“Blake,” she said with a merry smile. “I don’t think pulling out is really working. In fact, I think we have hard evidence that it’s not,” she giggled, sliding a hand over her huge mound. Cindy was about seven months gone by then, and growing bigger by the day. But my woman is absolutely gorgeous, and looked even more beautiful with the pregnancy weight.
“I think you’re right,” I growled, leaning over to press a kiss to her lips. “I didn’t pull out sometimes, and I’m happy I didn’t because now we’re expecting a baby.”
She shoots me a devilish look.
“You didn’t pull out most of the time, Blake. I’d say eight out of ten times, you blasted into me full force like a firehose.”
I laugh, chucking her under the chin.
“You’re right. But you liked it.”
She smiles ruefully then.
“I did, and I’m so happy that you did because our daughter is going to be her soon. Imagine that! We’re going to have a beautiful little girl.”
I was over the moon with happiness. A little girl who looked just like my wife, with the same golden blonde hair and cornflower blue eyes? It sounded absolutely perfect to me.
