Kai’s grin turned into a smirk. “Do you mind? Because it gets worse.”
Goose bumps skimmed Dev’s arms at the idea. “No. Not at all. I think I can get off just listening to you come. But dirty talk, that’s a definite button. Feel free to push that all you want.”
Kai was chuckling when he kissed Dev, which might be his second favorite way to kiss Kai. The first was being pinned to the wall as they tore at each other’s clothes. Their kisses slowed, and for a moment they just sort of stared at each other in silence.
But Dev could see the light starting to fade from Kai’s eyes as if some new dark thought were invading their happy moment.
“What’s wrong?” Dev asked, half expecting the man to evade the question.
Kai’s brow furrowed and he replied, “This is the part where I normally get up, wash, and leave.”
Dev’s heart gave a painful skip in his chest. Kai probably felt it they were so close together. He’d expected this. Kai didn’t live the kind of life where he dated the same person a lot. Maybe not a lot of repeats and sleepovers.
“But you’re stuck with me,” Dev said with a half smile to try and lighten the mood. Kai didn’t go for it.
“I’m not stuck. I’m never stuck with you.”
Okay, that brought the melty feeling back, but Dev needed to keep his head on straight for this conversation.
“What do you want right now? If you could have anything in the world.”
Kai made a face as if he were thinking about it, but Dev wasn’t fooled. “A shower where I get to thoroughly wash you, a nap together, and then I wake you up with a blowjob while I stretch that beautiful ass of yours with my fingers.”
Dev had to close his eyes and gather his scattered thoughts together while his exhausted dick tried to perk up and shout, “Yes! Pick me! Pick me!”
Clearing his throat, Dev had to try twice to get the words out. “Yes. I think that would be okay with me.”
But Kai’s answering smile was a little sad. “But I don’t want to lead you on, Dev. These stolen moments are wonderful. They have been heaven for me, but they are stolen. What you’ve seen over the past few days is my life. While this has been strange, it’s not really an anomaly for me. I deal in death, violence, and danger. You have a son and a wonderful, normal life. I honestly don’t know where this can lead that is good.”
It was the same thing he’d been telling himself for days now. No, months. Ever since he’d first spotted Kai and the man had started playing a leading role in all of his fantasies. And not just the dirty ones. Sometimes they were just cuddled up on the couch, talking.
God, he was boring.
“I understand, but it’s the same for all people. Everyone has their own life, and we have to find ways to get them to match up.” Kai gave him a skeptical look, and Dev rolled his eyes on a laugh. “Okay, so maybe our lives match up a whole lot less than most people. But can’t this be a little bit of fun? Can’t we just spend some time getting to know each other? What if we discover that while sex is great, we can’t stand being around each other the rest of the time?”
The skeptical look returned, which made his inner Dev wiggle with joy.
“Besides, we still have to locate this lunatic and stop him, right?”
“True,” Kai slowly conceded.
“After we get through that, we can talk. If there’s something between us we both want to explore, we’ll figure it out.”
“But you understand the problem that we face.”
Dev did all too well, but he refused to let it crush his good mood. He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the tip of Kai’s nose. “We’ll figure it out. Remember, that’s my job. I fix problems.”
Kai didn’t look less worried, but he nodded in agreement.
This somber mood wasn’t working for Dev. He knew their odds weren’t good, and that was assuming Kai didn’t get utterly bored with him. However, he also knew how short life was in general. It was important to cherish the good times while he had them.
Smiling broadly, he bumped his nose against Kai’s. “I believe there was some talk of a shower and a nap.”
Kai’s smile returned. “Yes, I think there was.”
Chapter 12
“How did Justin and Gabriel put up with you on that drive from Montana to Denver?” Kai teased as he turned off the signal and settled into the new lane. They’d been on the road for close to eleven hours, driving north from San Francisco to Seattle.
However, tonight they were stopping off at his condo in Portland. They were only another thirty minutes away, but it was clear that Devlin was at the end of his tolerance for sitting in the car.
