“When did you start performing?” he asked as he shrugged on his t-shirt.

“When I was twelve or thirteen,” I answered. “Things started to get kind of weird there for a bit. Like, I could do the routine, but not many people would want to watch a young kid do the routine when they could instead see some beautiful woman doing it. When I took over, it was because I’d finally grown a set of boobs, and nobody could tell I was thirteen when I was really high up in the air.”

“That’s kind of gross.” He chuckled. “Thinking about men looking at you when you were that young.”

I took a piece of toilet paper from the roll, then wrapped his spent condom up in it and tucked it into my top.

He followed me out, amusement on his face.

When we got back into the main part of the cooking trailer, I said, “I’ll go to the store with you right now if you’re interested in starting tonight. Otherwise, we can start tomorrow.”

I secretly hoped he’d start tonight, but I also didn’t think it was feasible.

I mean, it was already well past eleven in the morning, and it wasn’t super easy to cook for sixty people on the fly.

“What’s your schedule look like today?” he asked.

I looked at my watch and blanched.

“I guess I didn’t realize it was already noon,” I grumbled. “My schedule looks very busy. Especially when the first day at a new location is already super hectic. Add in this morning and then being off for two weeks…I should probably not have done this at all.”

“This” being fucking him.

Or, well, more accurately, he’d fucked me.

Well and thoroughly.

His amusement showed as he said, “Get out of here. I’ll find someone to help me. But I think today needs to be about inventorying what’s here, getting set up, and making sure that I am familiarized with everything. I can do sandwiches or something tonight for dinner, though. I’ll just need an escort to the nearest store.”

I pushed the food trailer door open and stepped out…right into my sister.

“I do hope you realize there’s a sanitation issue when you fuck on food prep surfaces,” Val drawled. “I also hope you’re in a better mood.”

I flipped my sister off.

“We did it in the bathroom, thank you very much,” I grumbled, not bothering to deny it.

“Sure you did,” she agreed.

I didn’t bother to explain myself.

Val would think what she wanted, and there wasn’t much that could sway her except for visual proof.

“I’ll catch you later?” I asked.

His wink said it all.

Yes, he would definitely see me later.

“Val,” I said. “Be a doll and get him situated. Show him the living quarters on the other side of the food truck. And, also, don’t be a dick all your life.”

That was likely too much to ask, but I asked it anyway.

I didn’t look back until I was almost out of sight.

When I did, it was to find Val talking to him, but his eyes were all for me.

CHAPTER 11

I will never trip over a man whose face I already sat on.

-Words of wisdom

COFFEY

“What the fuck is this?”

One of the circus workers, one I’d never seen before, strolled up toward the window where they could self-serve their own food and stared at the spread in front of him.

“What’s it look like, dumbass?” another one asked. “Jesus Christ, I can’t wait to eat that French toast. It looks divine.”

It was.

“It looks like sandwiches,” the first one replied. “But holy fuckin’ hell. These aren’t normal sandwiches.”

I snorted as I wiped my hands clean of the flour I’d just washed off the counter.

“Can I have two?” the second one asked.

I looked at the last ten remaining sandwiches.

“The only ones left to eat, by my count, are the sisters and Keene,” I explained. “That’s seven sandwiches. If there are any left after they’re done, then sure.”

My words made him sigh. “They always eat. And just sayin’, but they’re always late. Seems a waste to allow these fine, hot sandwiches to go to waste.”

“Or you could stop being a fat ass and think of someone else for a change,” Val snarled as she stomped up in line. “Go fuck yourself, Chad.”

Chad looked chagrined. “It’s not like I was actually going to eat it.”

“You would’ve if no one was here to police you,” Val narrowed her eyes. “Go get another bag of chips or something.”

With that, she yanked the plate holding a sandwich down, caught up a single bag of chips farther down the line, then nodded her head in thanks to me before leaving. She nearly disappeared into the shadows to a table I could just barely see.

“Damn, she’s hot,” Chad whispered.

“She’s also a voodoo queen,” the other replied. “You don’t mess with that kind of pussy.”

“She wouldn’t mess with me anyway, voodoo pussy or not,” Chad replied.
