“I think she really likes you.”

This comes from a different voice. Aden—the star of the movie. Great, freaking great. I should probably watch my mouth, but really two times in one day is kind of ridiculous.

Gavin stops and steps away from me suddenly. It kind of surprises me. I look down at my ruined shirt for a minute, not believing my luck for the day.

“You’re really a sweet angel aren’t you?” Gavin mutters, causing me to look at him.

“What are you talking about?” I ask exasperated.

“You’ve been a basket of sunshine today. I don’t think I’ve ever had a woman call me moron so quickly before,” he says.

“Well, to be fair, you’ve deserved it plenty of times in the past,” Aden adds in. Gavin flips him off, which makes Aden laugh.

If I wasn’t upset over having yet another shirt ruined, I’d laugh too. Instead, I focus my anger on Gavin. How dare he accuse me of being the problem here. I wonder how happy he’d be if I dumped coffee on him twice in one day. Maybe I should. I could dump it right on his head.

“Are you honestly trying to chastise me right now?” I ask, still not quite believing it.

“I’m not doing anything to you, lady. It was an accident—”

“An accident that you caused!”

“Fine, I admit it, but still—”

“Not once, but twice.”

“Twice?” Aden asks.

“Yeah, this morning when I was texting you. You know the texts you ignored?” Gavin mutters.

“You shouldn’t text and drive,” Aden admonishes, and winks at me. I really do have to fight a grin now.

“I was walking,” Gavin yells.

“Same difference,” Aden says easily, which earns him a jab in the ribs by Gavin’s elbow.

“Listen—”

“You could have seriously injured me! All because you were texting on your phone and not paying attention to what is around you—who is around you. What if my coffee had been hot? Burning hot. Not once, but twice! So yes, all signs are pointing to the fact that you are a moron.”

“I really don’t think she likes you Gavin,” Aden says.

“Casey! That’s enough! I’m sorry Mr. O’Leary, obviously Ms. Langley has forgotten her place.” This comes from Michelle who is over the hair, makeup and wardrobe departments and who is sadly my immediate supervisor. “I will of course reprimand her, accordingly.”

My day keeps getting better and better.

“Listen,” Gavin starts, but I cut him off.

“Reprimand me? This makes the second shirt he’s ruined today! He nearly ran me over and—”

“That’s enough, Ms. Langley. I’ll talk to you in a moment,” Michelle interrupts. She’s not even bothering to look at me though. She has her eyes glued on Gavin and I know that look. I know because I’ve seen all kinds of girls give it to Gavin when we were younger. Hell, I even gave him that look.

“Don’t bother,” I sigh. “I’m out of here.”

I walk around them, having had more than enough today. I admit quitting is a bit dramatic but between this, and having to face Gloria next, I’m pretty much done.

“Wait! I don’t want to cause a problem here,” Gavin starts, but I cut him off.

“It’s much too late for that dude,” I tell him, walking away.

“Dude?” he asks, his voice sounding strange. My heart speeds up, but I ignore it and keep walking. “Dude!” he says again. “Moth-girl! Is that you?” he asks and I stop mid-step.

“Moth-girl? I don’t think that’s the way to win her over man. Your game is slipping,” Aden says. I take a breath and keep walking away.

It’s the safest bet I have.

I watch as she walks away. I’ve thought about this girl more than a few times over the years. It was a moment out of time and I know it didn’t mean a lot, but I really enjoyed the conversation we had. I enjoyed being around her and I’ve always regretted that we didn’t get our kiss. It’s her. Years and years later and she’s here. What’s more is that the reality of her is better than the memory that’s stayed with me. If I’m going to be totally honest, I’ve kept her in my mind as the golden pussy. The one that got away, the one that I knew would be the sweetest fuck I had ever had. I’m a romantic like that.

Never in the twelve years that have passed since that night did I imagine I would actually see her again. I figured she was off driving a minivan with kids, a nine to five husband, living in suburbia hell—or whatever normal people do in life. I sure as hell didn’t figure I’d see her again and have her calling me a moron.

“I never thought I’d see the day,” Aden laughs.

Aden and I have been best friends since college. Actually he, Titan and I have all been extremely tight. We played football together in college. Well, Titan and I did, Aden had already graduated, but he would come by the team for workouts, help out the coach with tips on our training and other shit. The coach used Aden as a great recruiting tool. Not many schools have a professional helping them with training. Aden was cool though, his ego never got in the way. We instantly clicked and a friendship was born between the three of us. The only difference between us is where football took us in life. I blew out my knee, Aden decided he hated the game and wanted to write, and Titan went on to be one of the best quarterbacks ever to put on a jersey. Through all the ups and downs we’ve remained close. Right now however, I wish he wasn’t here.
