“Yeah. I’m not so hard with these guys,” I say. My internal queen whispers, three men in one week, and my heart skitters. It could have been more but I always regret a binge. Better to space things out and really enjoy them.
“Tell me EVERYTHING.” Dawn bounces in her seat like an excited toddler, and our server chooses that moment to return with our drinks. I’ve never seen Dawn shoot anyone such violent daggers from her eyes. When she’s finally gone, I take a sip of my soda, knowing that I won’t get much chance to once I get started.
“I’m three men down with four to go,” I say.
“Four? I can’t believe that’s the part you focused on. Explain that part after you’ve talked about the three men. Are they good in bed? Are they hung? Was it worth all the hype? Are you happy?”
“Yes, yes, yes, and yes.”
Dawn claps, drawing the attention of the table nearest us, and I shrink back in my seat with embarrassment. “Who, Kyla? Who?”
“Lex was first, then Kase, and then Niall.”
“Wow…so you got a taste of one of each of the multiples. I guess you know what to expect from the rest of them physically.”
“I hadn’t thought of it like that,” I say. They’re all so different that the similarity in their looks has melted away.
“Go through each date, one by one, and tell me everything.”
So I do. Our tacos come, and I add the spicy sauce with my tales of different dates and different kinks, and for once in my life, I seem to have rendered Dawn absolutely speechless.
If nothing else, all of this was worth it to see my friend with her mouth hanging open like she wants to catch flies.
“You are a sex goddess,” she gasps at the end. “You’ve done things that I’ve only read about. I mean, I love sex but fucking on a glass balcony above a nightclub is pushing my YOLO boundaries.”
“You’d do it if you got the chance,” I say.
“Hell yeah, I would. Except it’s not going to happen. Brent’s a god in the sack, but he’s a private man.”
“You’ve got a good one there,” I say. “No point in risking a good relationship to chase some temporary excitement.”
“Yeah,” Dawn says, but it’s without her usual commitment. “So, what are the other kinks?”
“I have no idea. I’m not allowed to look until I pick another date. Even then, some of them have made it cryptic.”
“I think I’m more excited than you are. Why aren’t you bouncing in your seat?”
“It’s not that I’m not excited.” I play with the edge of my napkin, trying to find the words to explain to Dawn exactly how I feel. “I am with each experience that goes past. I get left with a little tinge of blue too.”
“Why?”
“I guess it’s because I have a really good time, and I enjoy their company, and we’re awesome together, and it’s fun, but then it’s over, and there’s no going back and no chance to experience it all over again.”
“Over again?” dawn muses. “You think any of these guys would say no to another round with you?”
“It’s not that. It’s just that, while we’re playing the game, everything’s clear and straightforward. Our expectations are aligned, but once the game’s done, I’m just supposed to go back to my life as though nothing happened. I just don’t know if I can do that.”
“Can I give you a piece of advice?”
I nod, and Dawn takes a deep breath, preparing to step into the shoes of a sage. “Live in the moment. That’s what YOLO is all about. If you spend time worrying about what will happen in the future, you won’t enjoy the present. None of us knows how our lives are going to pan out. We could drop dead tomorrow, and all our plans and dreams will be lost. That’s why YOLO is so important. It gets us to focus on the things that are really important so that we can do them before it’s too late.”
“I’ll try,” I say with a smile that I know Dawn wants to see. “I’ll do my best.”
And I will. I really want to make the most of the next four experiences. I want to relish feeling like a goddess a few more times, and whatever happens when the game is done is something to worry about another day. But I know what I’m like. In a way, by living this experience, I’ve freed a part of myself, only to have to put another part in a box.
Maybe all freedom comes at a price.
“Anyway, I got you something.” Dawn grabs the pink bag from the seat next to her and passes it to me across the table.
“What is it?” I say, peering warily inside. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was a sex toy of some sort. Dawn has no sense of propriety. Whatever it is, it’s wrapped in pretty tissue.
