Telling himself he couldn’t avoid the inevitable list of chores forever, no matter how much he was enjoying his trek around her neighborhood, Derek headed back to Jessica’s. When he entered the house, all hot and sweaty from his run, everything was still quiet, so he jogged up the steps to his room and took a cool shower.
Half an hour later, dressed in a regular T-shirt and shorts, he went downstairs to make himself a quick breakfast and came to an abrupt stop as he entered the living room.
Jessica was there, wearing a pair of black, formfitting workout pants and a sports bra that exposed a few inches of skin around her midsection. Her hair was piled on top of her head, with loose strands falling delicately around her face. Her hands and feet were planted on a rubber mat, her body positioned in an upside-down V, with her pert ass up in the air, facing him, giving him a perfect, arousing view.
He nearly swallowed his tongue, and his asshole dick twitched at the thought of coming up behind her and . . .
“What are you doing?” he blurted out, much louder than he’d intended.
“Oh, hey. Morning!” She straightened so she was standing again, smiling as she pulled out one of the Bluetooth buds from her ears. “It’s yoga and that was a downward dog. I do yoga every morning. It’s a great way to start the day. Plus, it helps warm up the muscles and keeps me flexible and centered.”
Flexible . . . yeah, he could think of a dozen different ways to test out that theory—and immediately banished those dirty images from his mind. The yoga clearly also kept her well-toned, judging by the way her workout clothes outlined her body. She might be full-figured with soft curves, but she definitely had an hourglass shape he found incredibly alluring and sexy.
“Everything okay?” She was looking at him, head tipped to the side, eyes full of concern.
Shit. He’d been staring at her for longer than what was appropriate. “Uh, yeah,” he stammered, knowing he sounded like an idiot. Not to mention he was lusting over someone he couldn’t have.
He scrambled for a change of subject. “Want breakfast?”
“No, thank you.” She lowered herself into another yoga pose, one knee bent and her arms straight out by her sides. “I already had my morning protein shake.”
He nodded. “Okay, then I’ll grab a bite to eat and get started outside finishing what the contractors didn’t get done.”
“Sounds good,” she said, stretching both arms above her head, which only served to draw his attention to her full breasts, outlined beneath the sports bra she wore. “I have some things to do inside, so I’ll come out in a little bit to check on how things are going.”
He gave her a playful salute, then went into the kitchen to rummage through her refrigerator for breakfast. He found eggs, cheese, and mushrooms and made himself an omelet, which he washed down with a glass of orange juice.
As he walked out the slider to the backyard, he pulled up the text message Jessica had sent with the to-do list, making a mental note of what the contractors were able to do yesterday and what was still left to be completed. He started with the trim around the outside windows, spending hours painting them a soft gray shade to offset the darker gray siding on her house.
When that was done and he was able to check that item off his list, he moved on to stringing the lights along the patio pergola. He’d just opened the first box of lights when Jessica stepped outside, now wearing a bathing suit—a sexy one-piece that was tight across the bust and abdomen, with a flirty little skirt that skimmed just the tops of her thighs. She had on big, white-framed sunglasses and flip-flops, clearly heading out to the pool, while he continued to labor away.
“I take it your chores are done?” he asked.
“Yep.” She grinned at him. “I thought I’d come out and enjoy the nice weather and supervise.”
He picked up the string of lights. “How would you like these put up?”
“I don’t know.” She waved her hand up toward the lattice opening. “I guess kind of crisscrossing back and forth?”
Well, that wasn’t specific at all, but he had an idea of what she meant. “Okay, got it,” he said in a wry tone.
As he opened the package of hooks, he watched Jessica walk through the small yard to a nearby shed, enjoying the subtle sway of her hips as she moved. She went inside, then returned with a blown-up floating device that looked like a lounge chair. She put it into the shallow end of the pool, then managed to sit on top of the floating chair without tipping over.
