Sol and I remained quiet for a few moments. I wanted to believe Zephyr because that gave us an explanation of what was going on and an idea of what we needed to do next. I was tired of being in the dark, and this was the first piece of information that pointed us in some sort of direction. Could we trust that information, though?
“Why did you call, Zephyr?” I asked him. I doubted he called just to dump all of that information on me out of the goodness of his heart. I wasn’t even sure if Kings had hearts.
“Because I want you guys to help me rescue Biba. I know you both care about her… and I do too,” Zephyr responded. “But I can’t find her and rescue her by myself. I have too many eyes on me.”
“Sounds like you’re pretty useless over there. Theo and I can figure things out from here and see if you’re lying or not,” Sol replied with a slight sneer to his voice.
“Look, asshole, I spent a fuck ton of money from my trust to track you two down,” Zephyr snapped. “Are you going to help me or what?”
“I don’t care about helping you, but I do care about saving Biba. Like I said, Theo and I got it from here. I don’t need you double-crossing us like Arvo,” Sol told him as he narrowed his eyes.
“Whatever. Believe me or don’t. Biba’s life is on the line regardless. Call me when you reach your damn senses,” Zephyr bit out before hanging up.
Sol and I stared at the silent phone for a moment before looking at each other. It was obvious that we were both conflicted. Zephyr was still connected to his father, Arvo, and Arvo’s father. He was mixed into a dangerous group, and I was wary about working with someone who could easily betray us and get us killed. Then, no one could help Biba.
“What are you thinking?” I asked Sol. I couldn’t figure out what exactly to make of Zephyr’s phone call. It put me on edge, but maybe we finally had a lead.
Sol crossed his arms and shrugged, resting his eyes on the phone.
“I don’t know whether to trust him or not. He’s given me no reason to trust him, and he hurt Biba. He tossed her aside like she was nothing, and I’m supposed to believe that he’s concerned for her?” Sol replied as he shook his head.
I knew where he was coming from because that was my thought process too. I hadn’t ever trusted Kings before. Sol was the first King who I had worked with, and I still had iffy feelings about him at times. However, I trusted him more than I trusted Zephyr.
“He did care for her deeply at a time. There’s always a chance those feelings came back,” I pointed out. I had to view the situation from both sides because if we didn’t consider what Zephyr told us, we were back at square one. Even if Zephyr didn’t know where Biba was, we at least knew who took her if he wasn’t lying to us.
“I don’t want to believe that,” Sol muttered, lowering his eyes to the ground. “I don’t want him to get close to her again just to hurt her.”
“He might be our key to getting her back, though. We can use him to rescue her. Then, we can figure out what to do with him afterward,” I suggested. We couldn’t just stay in the cabin with all of that information and do nothing. We had a chance to get a step closer to Biba, and it seemed like we were running out of time to rescue her.
A thoughtful look crossed Sol’s face as he nodded.
“He can probably lead us to his father. I don’t know if I buy the act that he doesn’t know where she is. His father must’ve told him something,” Sol muttered, shaking his head. “Why would they leave him out?”
“Maybe Arvo’s father wanted to put his son in power,” I replied. It was all about power, and even if the Hurley family and the Williams family were working together, only one of them could lead. I wouldn’t be surprised if Arvo and his father were preparing to overtake Zephyr and his father.
As Zephyr mentioned, Arvo knew that Biba was his weak spot. I wasn’t sure if that was still true or not now, but some feelings refused to go away. No matter what Biba did, I still couldn’t shake my feelings for her. Even when I was upset about her being with Zephyr, Arvo, and Sol, I still didn’t stop loving her.
“It’s a possibility. That’s the thing. There are a million possibilities,” Sol scoffed. “We either trust Zephyr and end up dead or we end up saving Biba.”
