“Alright, book time.” With books, one more, please wouldn’t end up giving someone a tummy ache.

Ian was so excited, he bounced up from the table, not worrying about trying to talk either one of us into another cookie. “Bunny.”

With Bunny and the books in hand, he grabbed Cohen and they were off to the living room. I wasn’t sure if I was needed or not, so I took my time cleaning up and filling a bottle with water before quietly sneaking into the living room.

They were perfect together.

Ian in his bunny jammies was curled up beside Cohen, completely enthralled with the Peter Rabbit story. With every page, Ian seemed to inch closer until he was climbing onto Cohen’s lap, not looking like he was thinking about it at all. “Naughty bunny.”

Clearly, it was suspenseful and required cuddles.

Worry flashed over Cohen’s face for a split second, but Ian was too engrossed in the story to have caught it. For a moment I thought I’d have to step in, but all it took was one nuzzling cuddle from Ian for Uncle Cohen to wrap his arms around our boy.

I might be the Daddy and I was definitely going to have to be the rule person in this relationship, but Ian was our boy.

And our boy was yawning again.

He settled against Cohen as they kept reading the story, and as Ian’s head slowly lowered to rest on Cohen’s chest, I decided it was bottle time.

I wasn’t sure the best way to go about it, though, so I finally settled on sitting down beside them, completely nonchalant about the whole thing. No one could feel embarrassed or nervous if Daddy said it was perfectly reasonable, right?

Mentally crossing my fingers, I slowly walked across the room and sat down on the couch. Ian wiggled just enough to stretch his legs out over my lap, but he was still completely engrossed in the story. He barely looked up as I brought the bottle to his lips and rested it on the top of Bunny’s head.

Bunny was the perfect bottle rest and one brush of the nipple against Ian’s lips was all it took for him to start sucking on the rubber tip. For a moment he wiggled and went still—my best guess was he was probably wondering what Cohen thought—but as Cohen kept reading, Ian tuned out the last of his worries and melted against his Uncle Cohen.

For our first little night together, it couldn’t have gone more perfectly, and I couldn’t help wondering what the rest of our firsts would look like.

Chapter 8

Cohen

Watching him come out of his little headspace was just as sweet as watching him jump into it…but this time it was slow enough that I had more time to worry.

A jaw-cracking yawn had him stretching his shoulders as he slowly sat up from where he’d been stretched out on his stomach. With the movie ending, I hadn’t been sure what to expect and now I wasn’t sure what to do.

So I looked over at his Daddy.

Yep, this was definitely a Daddy moment.

Uncle Cohen was for fun stuff like sneaking him extra cookies and reading books when he was already in his little headspace.

But that view might’ve been a bit obvious based on Bishop’s smirk and the way he shook his head. I just shrugged then glanced down at Ian, who was now sitting up on his knees and looking down at his bunny as he yawned.

Yep, any minute…

Rolling his eyes, Bishop slipped off the couch and wrapped his arms around Ian, who barked out a laugh as he was dragged onto his Daddy’s lap. “I was worried we’d have to find another bunny movie.”

Blushing, Ian hid his face against Bishop’s shoulder and shook his head. “No, but if I pretend to still be little, can I have another cookie?”

Laughing, Bishop gave him a hug. “Not from me, but you could probably talk Cohen into it.”

Yep, probably.

“I resemble that remark.” My cheeky comeback had both of them laughing this time, but it was the way Ian peeked out from behind Bishop that made me feel lighter. “I’m a softie. What can I say?”

That got another laugh from Ian, but it also seemed to break the tension he was feeling because he went from hiding against Cohen to cuddling into him. As he rested his head on his Daddy’s shoulder, looking relaxed and sleepy instead of stressed, he yawned again. “Am I supposed to figure out what happens next?”

Bishop chuckled, turning his head to kiss Ian’s cheek. “That’s probably not a good idea. We’ll just end up with more cookies and no real plans.”

Ian didn’t look like he saw the problem with that, but after a moment he shrugged and pressed his face into Bishop’s neck. “You made good cookies.”

I wasn’t sure what that meant in terms of plans for the rest of the night, but Bishop’s smile said he wasn’t worried…and Ian was right, they were good cookies.
