Sky shot a wicked grin at me. “Every chance I get. And you wanna know why?”
“Uh, sure.”
“ ’Cause I’m not a little bit gay. I’m really fucking gay.”
“Good to know.”
“And I didn’t want to move home, give up baseball, and get a pretend girlfriend to please my parents. Geez, I don’t think I could get hard if I rubbed against a hot naked girl to save my life. I’m not wired that way.”
“So what did you tell your parents?”
“I told them I was staying in Cali.” Sky tipped his cup again and chomped on a mouthful of ice obnoxiously.
He kept his eyes locked on mine as though daring me to judge him. The dude was so damn prickly. Deceptively cool and calm one second and ready to rip my throat out the next. On some level, I always seemed to connect with weirdos like him. Hell, that pretty much described every guy on my team. Except none of them made my heart race and my dick twitch.
I tore my gaze from his mouth and inclined my head. “Okay. Um…good. I’m not sure what that has to do with accounting, but—”
“You wanted my life story, and you got it. You brought up Harry, then your bi roommate because the queer stuff is bugging you.”
“It doesn’t bug me.”
“All right. It confuses you and probably has you wondering why it feels heavy.”
I frowned so hard, I gave myself a headache. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
Sky fixed me with a fierce expression. “Whatever you think it means. Maybe it’s too much information at once. Or maybe it’s weird for you to change your perception of your friend. Or…maybe you can relate. And you don’t want to.”
“How?”
He shrugged with faux indifference. “Maybe you’re gay or bi…and very much in the closet. Like me.”
Blood rushed from my face so fast, I thought I might pass out. My mouth went dry and my heart raced and if I was confused before, I was flat-out lost now. Nothing made sense. I shouldn’t be here with Sky, sharing personal things, and he shouldn’t think we had anything in common. Because we didn’t.
But if he got it all wrong, none of this should make me sweat. And it did.
I licked my dry lips as I rested my elbows on the table, careful not to brush against his arm. “No. That’s not—I’m not…wh-why…what makes you think that?”
Sky cocked his head and observed me like an odd specimen under a microscope. “C’mon, Colby. Why are we here? Be honest. I’ve seen the way you look at me.”
“Like you’re an asshole?”
“Maybe I am. But if we’d met in a club instead of an econ class, I have a feeling we’d have blown each other a long time ago,” he singsonged.
I stared at his mouth for a moment too long before I caught the ready humor in his eyes and realized he was joking. Right. Okay. Which meant it was my turn to come up with something witty or snarky. I came up blank. Worse…I couldn’t stop wondering what it would feel like to have him suck my cock. He seemed like the kind of person who excelled at everything he tried. No doubt he was a pro. He’d know how much pressure to apply and when to angle his head and when to swallow and—oh, fuck.
“Yeah, right,” I huffed. I crumbled the mess of napkins with the remains of my lunch into a ball and stood. “Well, this has been fun, but I’m out.”
Sky pushed his chair from the table. He tossed his trash into the bin and waited for me to join him on the sidewalk outside.
“I’ll see you Monday. And don’t worry, I got this…no cooking the books or funneling money to the Caymans,” he said as he slipped his sunglasses on his nose.
“Just crunch the fuckin’ numbers, and stay out of trouble. Later.” I pulled my keys from my pocket and headed for my car.
“Wait up.”
I didn’t. I needed to get away from him asap. My body wasn’t cooperating with my brain, and the last thing I wanted was for Sky to think I liked him. I could put up with him for a few days of training, but I didn’t want a new friend. Not Sky, anyway. I unlocked the door and reached for the handle just as he yanked my T-shirt.
“What do you want?”
He pulled his sunglasses off and let out a deep breath. “You know, I was kidding back there. I’m sorry if I came on too strong.”
“You mean you don’t want to suck my dick?” I crossed my arms and leaned against the car door.
“Oh, no, I’d totally suck your dick. I probably shouldn’t have said it out loud. That’s all.”
“Probably not.” I noticed the slight tug of a smile at the corner of Sky’s mouth. “What’s so damn funny?”
