He finally takes mercy on me and wraps his warm hands around my hips. I hold on tight while he uses his hold to drag my hips down to meet his powerful upward thrusts. With each movement, he rubs a place deep inside me that sends pleasure zinging along my nerves.

“Come for me, spitfire.” When he rubs my clit with his thumb, I can’t resist his command. I throw back my head and cry out his name as my thoughts implode. After he thrusts a couple more times, his fingers dig into my hips while he comes deep inside me.

I’m staring at my computer screen, hoping for some bright idea to hit me over the head, when my office door flies open. “Good morning, dickhead.” Wild comes strolling in like he fucking owns the place.

“Fuck off, asshole.” We’ve been friends for a long time, and he’s used to my surly early-morning attitude. Everyone in our office knows I don’t like to be bothered before eight a.m. I glance at my watch and see it’s six-fifty-three. “It’s too goddamn early to deal with your sunny attitude.”

“If you were getting regular action, you’d have a sunny attitude, too.” His words send a tiny shred of guilt through me for the secret I’ve been keeping from my best friend for two years.

“Who says I’m not getting regular action?” It slips out before I’m able to stop the words. He doesn’t seem shocked by my question. All the teasing leaves Wild’s eyes as he smirks at me. This motherfucker already knew. Goddamnit. I’ve been jumping through hoops, trying to keep my “fling” with Piper a secret, and it was all for nothing.

“Ready to confess?” He stands and points at the leather sofa. “Come lie down and tell me all your problems.” My eyes narrow at Wild’s teasing.

“You’re not my goddamn shrink.” I slam my hand down on the desk.

“Best friend, business partner, shrink.” He shrugs. “I wear many hats in this partnership.”

I’m not sure what to do. Two years of trying to covertly win my girl’s heart have turned me into the pussy-whipped moron I always swore I’d never be. I open my mouth and close it again while trying to decide if I’m ready to spill my guts when a thought occurs to me. Maybe he can help me, after all. But, first, I need to discover what he already knows and find out who else knows my little secret.

“Why don’t you tell me what sins you think I need to confess?” I stall.

“Oh, no.” He isn’t falling for my ploy. “That’s not how this is going to work. I’ve been waiting for you to find the balls to discuss this.” He shakes his head. “So, let me have it, and then I can tell you what a moron you are.”

“I’ve been secretly seeing Piper,” I blurt out the basic truth.

“I already know that.” Wild rolls his eyes. Fuck me. While we’ve been so careful to keep our relationship a secret from our best friends, they’ve known all along. “Jenna and I have a bet going on how long it takes you two to admit it.” He sits on the edge of my desk. “So, why have you waited so long? It doesn’t make sense.”

“The first time I laid eyes on Piper, I knew she was my soulmate. When I asked her for a date, she shot me down. She told me she wasn’t looking for a long-term relationship.” It’s both embarrassing and freeing to admit the truth to my best friend. “I got lucky at your wedding when we both got toasted and things happened. After that, I convinced Piper to have a no-strings secret liaison.” My explanation sounds pretty stupid when I hear it spoken out loud.

“You got lucky at my fucking wedding?” Is that all he got from my tale of woe? His smirk tells me my best friend isn’t really mad or too goddamn sympathetic.

“Motherfucking lucky, but that isn’t the point,” I mutter, wondering when I lost control of this situation. Oh, yeah, the moment Piper stole my goddamn heart.

“No,” Wild agrees. “The point is you’re a moron.” No shit. I didn’t think we were debating that.

“Piper lied to you.” He sighs. “And your dumbass fell for it.”

That can’t goddamn be true. “Why would she fucking lie?” I can’t wrap my head around his statement. It’s like everything I thought was true just flew out the window.

“Because she overheard your stupid little spiel about not wanting to end up pussy-whipped like me and thought YOU didn’t want a relationship.” Surely, he’s wrong. I’m not sure if I should hope for him to be right or wrong. If he’s right, then I’ve wasted the last two years living in a purgatory of my own making for nothing. But if he’s wrong and Piper doesn’t really want a permanent relationship, my heart will never survive the disappointment.
