That one word is full of so much innuendo I’m not sure what to do. He lowers himself so our lips are a mere inch apart. If I moved even slightly, our mouths would touch.

My belly flips, and tingles caress my skin.

I want his mouth on mine again. The one that fills my dreams at night.

I need it.

Recognizing I absolutely am in charge of this moment, my hands lift to his chest, and I softly push him back, making enough room for me to escape without incident.

“Please excuse me, Mr. Cavendish. I need some fresh air.”

He moves back even farther.

“By all means. Run away, Rae. Again.”

I don’t even bother to scold him. I run because that’s the best thing I can do for us.

Raven

Tonight is all about securing Holly Morgan and making sure Paxton has this contract signed, sealed, and delivered.

Since it’s Pax, we are at Club Silver with a VIP experience that is another level entirely.

Behind the closed white satin curtains hiding us away from other patrons, we are seated on white couches with cloud-like cushions. Knowing how packed the club is, this amount of privacy is very welcome.

Bottle service offers only top shelf, and whatever your heart desires is on tap. After taco night, I’m keeping it simple and playing safe with Tito’s and soda.

I’m speechless at the level of attentiveness our hostess provides, although there’s no doubt it has everything to do with our host, Paxton.

She eyes him like a snack she intends to devour later, and I don’t doubt he’s prepared to allow it.

Every time she moves past us, I don’t miss how he eyes her long, tanned legs. She wears a black leather miniskirt that just covers her assets and a white halter top with the name ‘Brittney’ across the chest in glitzy silver lettering. Can’t blame the lady for playing Paxton’s game when he slipped her a hundred-dollar cash tip.

Holly Morgan and Charles sit on the couch next to me, their heads lowered together as they talk about God knows what. Her head falls back, and she laughs at something he’s said. Her dainty hand lands on his thigh, a little too familiar for my liking.

What is he doing?

Securing the deal by flirting?

How the hell will that not end in disaster?

“Don’t worry about that,” Paxon says, scooting closer to me. “It’s not worth getting a wrinkle between your eyes.”

“I don’t want him to mess this up because he’s improper.”

“Improper?” Paxton says with a grin.

I nod briskly. He sits back, putting one arm above my shoulder on the couch, leaning in closer like he’s about to impart classified information and doesn’t want anyone else to hear.

“That man is the epitome of professional.”

I flash him an are you serious? expression.

He chuckles. “If you’re thinking about what happened between you two, don’t. Your situation is entirely unique. A case of not knowing who each other was.” He takes a long pull from his bottle of Stella. “If he would’ve known that you’d been hired at Cavendish, he never would’ve touched you.”

I bristle, and I’m not even sure why. He hasn’t said anything insulting.

“Calm down, killer. I’m not saying he wouldn’t want to. He just wouldn’t cross that line. The New York branch of Cavendish Corporation means everything to him.”

“Why?” I ask, curious as to why New York trumps London.

London is his home. It’s where his family is.

“That’s not my story to tell, and frankly, if you two are going to be working together, it’s probably best you don’t ask.”

“Why?”

“Is that your favorite word? You don’t get overtime bonuses for asking more questions, Raven.”

I bite my bottom lip, trying to stop the smile from spreading. “No, I’m curious, and curiosity doesn’t require long-winded questions.”

He smirks. “Curiosity kills.”

I roll my eyes. “Whatever. Just answer the question.”

“Do you think you two could actually carry on a relationship of any sort while working together? He’s the boss.”

He makes a very valid point. One I’ve thought about myself.

“We’re not going to have any sort of relationship. But I would like to understand him and his motives a little more.”

“Take my advice, keep yourself at a distance. For both your sakes.”

I chew on my cheek, wanting to ask why yet again, but refrain. Paxton has been nothing but kind since I first met him, and if he’s warning me off his friend, I have to believe he has both our best interests at heart.

Besides, it was never a question.

We kissed.

We touched.

We moved on.

“And I really don’t have to worry about that?” I ask, nodding my head toward Holly and Charles. “I ask purely for the sake of Diosa.”

“No. I’ll let you in on a little secret. Holly Morgan is married.”

My brows knit together. “And . . .That doesn’t bother everyone.”

“Her husband owns a bank. An entire bank. Cavendish, for all his wins, can’t outdo ‘owns a bank’.”
