“Babe?” I asked.

“Babe…”

“Well,” I said, a smile stretching across my face, “I guess it’s time, then.”

She nodded, and I knelt down to kiss her hard. I held out my hands, and she used them to pull herself up. My thoughts were going approximately a billion miles a second, and I turned in place four times trying to remember what was next. Camilla reached out and grabbed me by the shoulders, making eye contact with me and stopping me in my tracks.

“Alex, you are making me anxious. You need to focus,” she said in a voice full of calm and confidence. “The go bag is beside the couch on the other side. I just need you to get my phone and my bathroom bag and we can go. Do you need me to drive?”

That was what snapped me back to reality. The fact that she thought I was too nervous to drive when she was the one who was about to pop clicked something in me, and I shook my head.

“No. I’m good. I have no idea how you are so calm about this, but I’ll be fine. You… stay here.”

“I’ll stay here,” she said. “But hurry, please.”

I took off to the bathroom, grabbing the bag she had been using to hold her essentials over the last few days for this specific situation. By the time I made it back into the living room, Camilla was already at the door, her jacket on, her purse in one hand, and the other to-go bag by her feet. She had her pillow under one arm, a stuffed animal I had bought the baby months before tucked in with it, and there was a towel on the couch, a spray bottle of cleaner on the table by it, obviously having been used.

“How did you do all this? I was gone for like five seconds,” I said.

“I have a baby about to come out of my body. There are larger miracles at play here,” she joked.

“This is true,” I said, nearly skipping over to her and grabbing the go bag. I stuffed my wallet and phone in my pockets and grabbed the keys. “Let’s go.”

I helped her out of the house and into the car, giddy with excitement. As she settled in her seat, I saw that she had put a towel down underneath her, thinking so clearly and thoughtfully about things that it blew me away. I got in the car, thankful that I had programmed the GPS to the hospital as a saved destination a few days before. I thought it was probably silly, since I knew where the hospital was, but the worry was that I would be nervous and take a wrong turn.

As I turned the car on and began heading down the road, Camilla connected her phone to the speakers wirelessly, and a phone started ringing.

“Who are you calling?” I asked.

“I thought you might want to tell your brothers,” she said.

“You are amazing, you know that?”

“I do, actually,” Cameron’s voice said over the speakers, having apparently picked up. “I am glad you are finally noticing that. I’ll be sure to spread the message to the others.”

“Cameron,” I said, ignoring his teasing, “we’re on the way to the hospital. The baby is on the way!”

“Congratulations!” he said. “I can’t wait to meet baby Cameron!”

“I told you we are not naming the baby after you.”

“I thought you said you hadn’t settled on a name yet,” he said.

“That’s true, but we did rule out your name,” Camilla said.

“Oh, getting it from both of you now,” he laughed. “Alright, get off the phone and focus on driving. I’ll tell everyone else and meet you there. This is so exciting!”

“Thank you, Cameron,” Camilla said.

As the phone hung up, eighties music began to softly play through the speakers from her phone. I looked over at Camilla, who shrugged and smiled. Our great adventure was just beginning, and it would be the best one yet.
