Is this the master suite? It's definitely nice enough, but I didn’t imagine he would put me in his room. Then I wonder where he’s staying.

After I put on the boxers, I find one of his shirts and go hang up my towels. I’m conscious of the fact that we’re guests here, and I don’t want to make him regret asking us to stay.

Not wanting to wake Fraser, I quietly open the bedroom door to go peek around the house. Suddenly I’m extra curious about where he’s sleeping. Or maybe I want to see him again.

When I sneak a look inside the nearest door, I see that it’s a guest room. The curtains are open, letting the moon flood in to cast a soft light across an untouched bed. I go to the next door and when I push it open, I see it’s an office.

“Looking for me?” that deep familiar voice rumbles from behind me, making me jump.

“Ah...” I am so busted. “What time is it?” I ask quickly to change the subject.

“A little after midnight. You've only been asleep a few hours,” Fraser says and then stands from the sofa. “You need something?” His tone is firm, making me want to straighten up.

“No.” I step back.

“Shit,” he mutters. “I’m not trying to sound like a dick. Maybe I’ve been spending too much time out here on my own.”

“You sound a bit irritated,” I say gently and then step back toward him.

“I’m not.” He runs his hand across the short scruff of a beard. “Or I am, but not at you.”

“Then who are you irritated at?” When I walk closer, I see what’s on the table in front of the sofa. He’s got a rifle and handgun sitting on it with some dirty rags and a small box. “Fraser?”

“I’m only cleaning them. I’ll lock them back up when I’m finished.”

“Why are you cleaning them in the middle of the night?”

“Didn’t want Mina seeing them.” In a strange way, that’s sweet.

“But they needed to be cleaned now?” I grab the back of the sofa and try not to be worried.

“I got two girls in my home that are running from something, and I have no idea how bad it is. So yeah, they need to be cleaned now.”

Yeah, that’s kinda hot. Scary but hot.

“Sit,” he orders but holds his hand out for me to take. When I place mine into his, he guides me over to the sofa next to where he was. When I take a seat, he lets me go. “Stay put.”

Fraser tosses a few more logs on the fire before going into the kitchen. I can’t take my eyes off him as he moves around the space, and that’s when I notice he changed out of his jeans into sweatpants. When he comes back over, he has a mug and hands it to me.

“Mina told me I make the best hot chocolate.” He smirks.

“Thank you,” I say and take it from him.

“Don't tell her it’s my mom’s recipe.”

“Your secret is safe with me.”

Fraser sits down next to me, and I see him looking at the shirt I put on. “Have you got bags in your car?”

“Yeah. Everything we own is in that car. Oh god.” I close my eyes, realizing my ID and the money is still there.

“Hey.” Fraser cups my cheek. “It’s going to be fine, I promise.” There’s conviction in his voice as he reassures, me and when his hand drops from my cheek, I want him to put it back. “You wear it better than I do.”

I glance down at the oversized shirt. “University of Chicago?”

“That’s where I went to law school.”

“Law school?” Wow. This man is full of surprises.

“I don’t practice anymore.”

He goes back to cleaning the guns while I sip on my hot chocolate and snuggle into the sofa. At one point, Fraser grabs a blanket off the back of the sofa and puts it over my lap. Warm and comforted, I relax, and a calmness settles around us. Neither of us says anything for a long while, and soon enough my eyes are too heavy to keep open. When I feel him shift I open them again, and then I see him leaning over me. It should probably scare me but something about Fraser is so calm and controlled.

“I’m going to take you to bed.” His low voice comes out soothing.

“Your bed?” I ask and then correct myself. “I mean, you’re letting me sleep in your bed. Not the bed you’re using now.”

“I’ll take you to any bed in this house.” He takes the empty mug out of my hand. “Just tell me where you want to go.”

“You’re teasing me,” I tell him right before he scoops me up into his arms.

His big body is warm and strong, and I can’t help but wrap my arms around him before laying my head on his shoulder. I’m sleepy enough to not think about what I’m doing as I brush my nose against his neck to breathe him in.
