“I was the one who helped the club get hold of him. If it weren’t for that, he wouldn’t be dead.”

“No, you’re right, he wouldn’t. You’d be in prison, though. You think of that? He didn’t have a single problem takin’ you down. You want to mess with people in that way and that’s what’ll happen to you.”

I guess he’s right, it still doesn’t make me feel any better.

“Anyway, it’s over with now. I’m free and he’s gone. I don’t know what’s going to happen to the business or the house. I’m not certain I’m ready to deal with any of that right now.”

“Then don’t, if you have something to do with it, they’ll hunt you down, believe me. Until then, let whoever is handling it do their job.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Anyway, tell me about you. Take my mind off things.”

“Got some big shit goin’ down at the ranch. Some big cattle sales and a fuck load of business rollin’ in, so I’ll have to hire a few people. You interested?”

I snort. “I play with cars, not cows.”

He chuckles. “What’s wrong with cows?”

“They smell really bad.”

“It’s good money.”

“I’m not working for you, Rhett. We’d kill each other. God, can you imagine?”

“I can be nice.”

“You’re grinning right now, I can tell.”

He chuckles. “Yeah. Well, if you change your mind, I’ve got a horse with your name on it.”

“Do you remember what happened last time I got on a horse? I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

He laughs. “Oh, I fuckin’ remember. I’ve never seen someone fly off a horse with such grace in my life. Even when you landed on the ground you seemed unbothered.”

I recall it and cringe. I know I landed on the ground and tried to act super cool about it, laying there all calm and collected, trying to look like my body wasn’t bent out of shape. Everyone was laughing and I rolled to my side, propped my head up on my elbow and said, “What? That’s it? That’s what you all complain about?” yet on the inside, I was shaking from pain and shame and everything else that stupid horse brought upon me that day.

“Trust me, I was bothered. I was super bothered. You just weren’t going to know about it. Are you going to be hiring any nice young ladies to work on your little farm?”

He grunts. “It’s not a farm, and women can’t do the work I need.”

“Ow, sexist. I guarantee they can. Have you seen Yellowstone? My god, some of those girls are bad ass.”

“I have no idea what fuckin’ Yellowstone is, but I’ll keep it in mind.”

“It’s a show about a bunch of ranchers, and there’s this one guy, whoo boy, he’s a looker...”

“Gotta go now,” Rhett interrupts me. “I don’t need a visual of your toy boy.”

I laugh. “Well, if you get bored, it’s worth a watch.”

“I’m never bored enough for television. Catch you soon.”

“Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

He hangs up the phone and I place mine down, leaning back in the chair I’m sitting in. I took a break from work to answer his call, I haven’t had much of a chance to do so since things have been resolved and I knew he’d want to hear from me.

“You goin’ to sit there all day or are you goin’ to fix some cars?” Remy asks, walking into the room, arms crossed.

“You look so handsome when you’re pissed off.”

He gives me a look that makes my skin break out into those tiny little bumps. Damn, that man knows how to work my body.

“I’ll fuck you later. Right now, I need you to deal with the old woman outside who refuses to talk to me and insists on speaking with you.”

“Oh, is it Shirley?”

“That’s her. Said she wants you to explain what happened with her car.”

“I’m on it.”

I jump to my feet, kissing Remy as I rush past. His big hand gives me a good slap on the ass before I reach the door, which has me rushing out with a grin on my face. Shirley is standing by her car in the parking lot, arms crossed, scowling at Hank who is looking at her like he has a few choice words he’d like to share.

“Don’t do it, Hank,” I say, and his eyes swing to me. “You’re a big boy now. We use nice words.”

He grins at me.

I walk over to Shirley, a big smile on my face. “Shirley, how are you? How is Robert?”

“Robert is fine, dear. He’s been busy recovering at home.”

“That’s wonderful to hear. What can I do for you?”

“That...that man in there said my car is going to cost more than you said it would.”

That’s because her car was a god damned wreck when we got into it.

“They did call you before proceeding with the work, telling you it would likely be more. Did you not give them the go ahead?”
