These girls are the best, seriously.
“Yo, I was with this guy once that was born with a curve like that, but it was so full on that it hurt and I had to make an excuse why I couldn’t be with him anymore, and he started crying and said ‘it’s my penis, isn’t it?’” Ramona tells us between giggles. “It was the worst.”
“Oh god, poor thing,” I grip my chest to try and catch my breath. “Imagine trying to explain that one when you met someone. So hey, I’ve got a right-angle dick so things might get a bit uncomfortable.”
We all lose it again.
“Fuck me, what are you girls talkin’ about now?” Riggs asks, walking into the café with all the guys.
It’s closed for the night, but Eve invited us all around for a few drinks and some food. It’s so nice in here, and when nobody can bother you, it’s even better.
“We’re talking about crooked penis’,” Poppy tells them.
We all laugh, harder.
“Jesus,” Remy mutters. “Should have stayed at the club.”
He comes and sits down beside me, mouth going to my neck where he gives me a little kiss that makes my skin prickle in the best way. “You tell them about our fucking last night?” he murmurs.
“Mmmm,” I answer, turning and kissing him.
“Fuck,” Hugh mutters, sitting beside me. “Stop that shit.”
“Hey,” I say, giving him a grin. “Don’t be upset. This could be you soon. How’s it all going, by the way?”
His jaw tightens, like the very mention of it makes him want to scream. “It’s goin’.”
“Did you sort out your baby momma?”
He grunts. “I agreed to give it a go. Should be fuckin’ great. Lookin’ for a place now.”
“What about Maggie, did you chat to her?”
“Yeah, she’s a fuckin’ funny girl. I think she might make things a bit easier living with Delilah and Starla.”
“Oh, she won’t let you down. She’s hilarious but she’s also strong as fuck, like she won’t take any shit. She’ll be great.”
“Delilah isn’t happy about it, said somethin’ about her bein’ too young but I know it’s because she’s fuckin’ hot and she doesn’t like that. But it was my choice and she had no other way out, she had to agree, or I wasn’t goin’ to give this a go.”
He’s right.
Maggie is gorgeous.
She’s also funny and bubbly and most men are drawn to her purely because of that.
She’s great with kids, too.
“I’m sure it’ll be okay. Does that mean you and Delilah are dating?” I ask.
“I don’t know what we are. Tryin’, I guess.”
“Well, good luck.”
“Thanks, I’m goin’ to need it.”
Oh boy.
It really sounds like he is.
Poor guy.

“I HAVEN’T SEEN DORIS in here all week,” Eve says, handing me a coffee as she glances around the café, her face scrunched with concern.
“Really?” I ask, feeling worried myself.
Everyone loves Doris, the woman is a real charmer and there is just something about her you can’t not like.
“I hope she’s okay. Do you think there is a way we can find out?”
“Does she have any family?”
Eve shakes her head. “No, but she does come in with a group of ladies once a week. I think they’re from the sewing club. We could go and ask them?”
“Sounds good. I am finished work for the day, I could come with you?”
She nods, undoing her apron. “I’ll just go and tell Jade I’m going to step out. I’ll be there in a sec.”
She rushes off and I take my coffee and my car keys, going outside to wait for her. A few minutes later she joins me, and we drive a couple of blocks over to the sewing club which is run from a house where a lovely lady lives. I forget her name, but she has been running this sewing club for as long as I’ve been alive. As kids we used to run past, and all the ladies would give us cookies.
Good times.
Eve and I go up to the front door and knock, a few minutes later she answers. I could swear she hasn’t aged a single day. Her white hair, which has always been the same, is in a neat bun on top of her head. She has soft blue eyes and is short, but always has a happy smile on her face.
“Well hello, Eve,” she says. “Is everything okay love?”
“Hi Meg, I was wondering if you have seen or heard from Doris?”
Meg.
That’s it.
“Oh, dear, haven’t you heard?”
Oh god.
If she says Doris is dead, I’m going to pass out.
No way that woman hasn’t got a good solid chunk of years left in her.
“Oh god,” Eve says. “Oh, please don’t tell me...”
“Oh, no, dear. She’s not dead. She had a bit of an accident at home and fell down some stairs. She broke a hip and had to have surgery. She’s doing well, but she has to sell her house and move into something more appropriate for her age.”
