“Your epic cuddling skills,” I said, wiggling my ass against him. I felt like I was in a big, Mitch-shaped cocoon, and I was more than happy to stay like that for the rest of my damned life.

“Speak for yourself,” he said, clearly getting sleepier by the moment. “You’re the one who feels so good I can’t let you go.”

“Please don’t, actually,” I said.

“I won’t,” he whispered near my ear. “I don’t want to let you go.”

It was like I could feel every single word gripping harder around my heart. Mitch had owned some part of it for my whole life, but now he was truly making it his own.

But right now, I was too tired and way too fucking happy being near him to worry about any consequences.

“Okay,” I said softly. “I’m going back out to the couch in an hour.”

“Mmm,” he hummed, tucking his nose against the back of my neck and breathing deep.

The sound of a leaf blower outside woke me some amount of hours later. My eyes shot open and I turned around under Mitch’s arm just in time to see his eyes shoot open, too. Sunlight was streaming through the slats in the window.

“We’re idiots,” he said immediately.

“The biggest idiots in the world,” I agreed.

Mitch leaned over to look at the alarm clock on the bedside table. “Fuck, it’s almost nine,” he whispered.

As if on cue, both of us heard the sound of the floorboards creaking as Zach walked down the hallway. Mitch and I were both frozen in place, but a minute later, the sound of the shower turning on came through, and we both exhaled.

“He’ll be in there for at least ten minutes,” Mitch said.

“I’m gonna get back out there,” I said, tossing the comforter off my body, all of that sweet, cozy heat dissipating too soon.

“Hey, just a minute, there,” Mitch said. I felt a big, heavy arm clutching around my body, pulling me back into his gravity.

“We don’t have much time, if you don’t want Zach to know,” I said as Mitch held me even tighter.

“Not letting you out of my grip until I get what I want,” he said.

I laughed, shimmying around in his arm until I was facing him, the front of my body pressed up against the front of his.

“Oh,” I said, feeling that he had a very, very big case of morning wood. It made my cock stiffen.

“We don’t have time to do anything about it right now,” Mitch said, pressing slow kisses to the side of my head and neck, “but I want a rain check from you.”

“Rain check? More like a cock check,” I said, palming his shaft.

He moaned softly. “Cum check,” he said. I laughed.

“Fuck check,” I said.

“We really are idiots,” Mitch said, leaning forward and kissing my lips before taking a deep breath. “Okay. Go now while the coast is clear.”

I gathered my clothes quickly, tossed them on, and began my sneaking mission back out to the couch. It was almost fun, in a way—it felt like the same thing I would have had to do if Mitch and I were in high school and we’d had to sneak around our parents.

Of course, that was a life that was never available to me. But any silver lining I could find in this was worth it to me.

In another twenty minutes, Mitch, Zach, and I were all in the kitchen again, Mitch giving some simple scrambled eggs a shot. The food turned out perfectly, and when it was time to head to the dog shelter, Mitch came along, as well. The ride over to the school consisted of Zach and I telling Mitch about all of the different types of droids in the Star Wars universe, and when we got to the front flagpole at the school, Sophia and Priya hopped into the back seat with Zach.

The shelter was busy, with a lot of adoptions taking place and a lot of new dogs coming in. I taught Mitch how to log new pets into the computer system, and watched as Zach and Sophia made quick work of making sure every water bowl was full.

The day almost felt surreal. I could have sworn it felt like we were one big, happy family. I’d even gotten to wake up next to Mitch, regardless of the sneaking around.

At the end of the shift, Zach and I took on the task of loading trash bags into the dumpster out back. He was able to push the rolling trash can with his one working arm, but with his brace, he wouldn’t be able to toss the big bags in.

“You have a good time today?” I asked him, helping him hoist a big bag over the threshold.

“It was great,” he said. “I kind of love working here.”

“Everything going okay with Sophia?” I asked.
