Part of his mind was definitely still working on the puppy party thoughts but it seemed like he pushed those to the side for a moment as he looked around. “You must not put a lot of miles on your car.”

His mind was always a delight.

Perfectly willing to change the subject for now, I nodded as I turned off the car. “Yes, most of the time I love it but occasionally it’s a pain in the ass. When one of the part-timers at the bakery pulls a no-show, I’m the one most likely to get called in.”

Payton winced. “That sucks. I guess working for family has its downsides.”

That made me snort. “A lot of them, honestly.”

Giving him a quick peck on the cheek, I released my seat belt and his. “I’m going to come around and open your door.”

That got a blush from my cutie but he nodded. “Thank you, Master.”

Hmm, that was definitely a clue that he was still fine even though his brain had stumbled over the pups. “Good boy.”

That pushed more of his random thoughts away and had a shiver running through him. A faint whimper was all I got from him before I climbed out of the car, but the look on his face said I didn’t have anything to worry about.

His brain might’ve been overloaded but he took a visible deep breath as I walked around the car and he was trying to look relaxed as I opened it. “You’re not trying to hide the fact that you’re worried and overthinking the situation, are you?”

He froze, then shook his head sheepishly. “Nooo, Master.”

Naughty little pup.

“Come here, pet.” Taking his hand, I helped him out of the car and then gave him a kiss as I pulled him close. “If your brain weren’t going a thousand miles an hour, I would be the one who was worried.”

He gave a soft laugh before snuggling into me and nodding against my chest. “Yes, Master.”

Hugging him tight, I kissed the side of his head. “Now, is there anything important that you’re thinking about or just worried about in general that we should discuss before we go upstairs or before we have a scene?”

Immediately shaking his head, Payton’s answer looked confident. “No. But you’re right. My brain is…it’s going very fast.”

Then we were going to slow it down or at least give it a very singular focus. “I know just how to fix that, pet. Let’s go upstairs.”

Payton let out a slightly ragged breath as he straightened but he looked into my eyes and didn’t hide. “Thank you for being patient with me.”

Wagging my finger at him as we headed toward the back door, I made a tsking sound. “Fair warning, if you’re going to apologize for being reasonable or anything like that, I’m going to make you write lines when we get upstairs.”

That got a rough swallow as his eyes went wide again. “No, Master.”

As we went in and I locked the door behind us, I hit the button for the elevator and raised one eyebrow. “Are you sure? It sounded like the start of you apologizing for not being manly enough or going fast enough.”

His father was an ass…probably a bigger ass than mine if we were keeping score.

Payton was scrambling to get himself out of the hole he’d started digging but luckily it wasn’t too deep yet. “No. I was…I was just thinking about how distracted I was at dinner and you…you were very patient because I wasn’t giving you enough attention.”

Oh, that was good.

It was good enough it deserved a reward. So as the elevator door opened, I took his hand and pulled him in, giving him a kiss as I hit the button for my floor. “That’s not necessary but thank you for thinking about me, pet.”

Relief rushed through him making me fight the urge to laugh as he sighed and snuggled closer. “I…I worry about you, Master.”

That was probably the truest thing he’d just said, so I kissed his head and let my hands wander lower to squeeze his ass. “I like knowing you’re thinking about me, pet.”

Our floor came faster than I wanted but it was probably a good thing since we didn’t need to have sex in the elevator. “You’re a very good boy.”

That got another needy sound but he took a breath as we separated and I led him into my apartment. It was just enough time to give him a chance to start overthinking again but it looked like he was trying to stay relaxed as we headed inside.

“I have to admit I try not to think about you too much at work because it makes me stupid.” He shrugged, looking slightly sheepish as I chuckled. “And Amanda is not subtle about her questions at this point.”

Now it was my groan that him laughing.
