At seventeen my father was still giving me a curfew, which now that I think about it I didn’t even have because I was never allowed out of the house without a family member so there was never any question of me coming home late.
He hadn’t said anything yet and I just felt worst. “I bet no one else in this room has to rush back home in an hour.”
“Caitlin you could never destroy my anything. You’re the best part of my teen experience. That Shana girl is not Jorgenson’s first girlfriend and knowing him, she won’t be his last. And even if she is, what we have is so much better than what anyone else in this room will ever have.”
“How can you say that?”
“Do you know what kind of man your dad is?” I shook my head no, not even remotely in the mood to discuss Colton Lyon.
“Your dad is the kind of man who found true love, not many people do though they like to pretend.”
“Because he knows what true love is, he wants the same for his daughter. He wants for you what he gives to your mom. Someone who’s going to be there for the rest of your life. Someone who’s going to love you no matter what, someone who’ll stand beside you and in front of you when it’s needed.”
“I keep telling you, I’m not going anywhere. Don’t compare yourself to some girl whose parents would let her go home with a guy she’s only just met. I spoke to Jorgenson about a year ago and his girl’s name was Sara. He swore he was in love, that she was the one. She was about the fifth ‘one’ since high school.”
“Look at me!” I finally lifted my head with the help of his finger under my chin. “We’re always going to be together, you’re always going to be my ‘one’ nothing is going to change that. If you’re worried about sex, about me wanting it with someone else, no need. All of my firsts belong to you.”
“Mom wasn’t dad’s first.”
“Your dad was a grown ass man when they met, but I’ll bet you anything none of the others meant half as much as she did and still does.”
“How do you know?”
“Have you seen the way your dad looks at your mom?”
“Oh gross, don’t remind me. He gave her a hickey the other day.” Thankfully the conversation changed from us to them and though I heard him and understood most of what he said, I still couldn’t lose the feeling that if something didn’t happen soon I’ll lose him forever.
Just a quick look around the room showed how different our relationship was to all the others. Some of the girls were sitting in their guy’s lap, while others were leaning over the table to share a kiss. I know for a fact that Todd wouldn’t do more than hold my hand in this place for fear of it getting back to daddy.
He can wait all he wants, but I’ve had it. I know he says now that everything’s fine, that he doesn’t mind what daddy is doing and has done to us, but how long will that really last? Maybe it’s time I show daddy that I’m not his little girl anymore.

“Mengele, get in here.” I waited until my wife disappeared with Cierra after helping her put the babies down for the night. Mancini and I were in my office biding our time while this one kept walking back and forth in the hallway outside the door.
“Yes daddy?” She smiled at Mancini and walked over to his side, leaning into him like they were old friends. “I want you to tell me about Lily.” She gave him a look like he’d spilled a top secret.
“How do you know about Lily daddy?”
I didn’t bother answering her. I wasn’t about to get trapped in her maze of twenty questions. “Start talking, what is it that the two of you learned?” I don’t know what the heck Mancini expects two eight year olds to have found out that we couldn’t, but he’s been on my ass since dinner ended.
“Promise you won’t get mad.”
“Why would I get mad? Did you do something you’re not supposed to do?” She shrugged her shoulders. “Let me rephrase that, did you do something I told you not to do?”
“No daddy.”
“Okay. I’m not gonna get mad, you’re not gonna get in trouble, but Mengele, the next time you know something you come to me first.” I ignored Mancini’s snort and waited for her to tell me what the heck it is that he thinks is so important.
“Okay daddy I’ll be right back.” She left the room and was back in less than five minutes with a sheet of paper which she passed to me. I opened the paper not sure what I was expecting but as soon as I saw Friends of Alice my gut ran cold.
