And it had.

Winking back at Micah, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called Samantha. When she answered, her voice letting me know immediately that she was still angry over this morning, I said, “I’m quitting this case, Sam. Consider me off duty for the next couple of weeks. I’m taking personal time.”

I heard her huff in frustration. “I can’t believe you, Landon Honeycutt. You know better than this. You’re more professional than this.”

“Not this time, I’m not. No need to send another agent to take my place. I’ll keep an eye on things here.”

“You realize this could cost you your job, don’t you, Landon?”

“Don’t care,” I countered. And I didn’t. Nothing was more important than trying to build a bond with Micah.

“He’s my godson, Landon,” she said quietly. “His life hasn’t been good, and he deserves somebody that values him the way he deserves to be valued. You’ve never been the type of man to sleep around just for the sex of it, and I hope you aren’t planning on starting now. If you are, pick someone other than Micah.”

“Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that with me,” I quipped sarcastically. “I hope you had the same conversation with your brother regarding my son.”

“Touché, Agent Honeycutt. That’s agent on agent, not agent on client.”

“Just consider me off the case,” I growled and then disconnected the call. Before I could put the phone back into my pocket, it pinged that I had received a text message. I thought about putting it away without reading but decided there was no point putting off the inevitable. I glanced at the message to see Sam’s text. It read, ‘There’s nobody I’d rather see with my godson than you, Landon. Just don’t let your fucking head get in the way and cause you to push away something beautiful—like the rest of the male agents working for me.’

Damn, she knew me well. She knew how I’d be trying to come up with every reason in the world for why it wouldn’t work between Micah and me instead of just letting the cards fall where they should and let fate take over.

“Hey, handsome,” Micah said, suddenly right in front of me, those blue eyes looking sexy as fuck with the black smudged around them. “My next step is wardrobe. You ready?”

He didn’t look at all nervous about getting undressed in front of strangers and friends with the base of the plug clearly visible between his beautiful cheeks. He’d taken to the toy like an expert. Sure, there’d been a few times I’d watched him wince when he sat down or times his cheeks had turned a pretty shade of pink when the toy probably bumped his prostate as he walked. Other than that, he’d appeared perfectly innocent to anyone that might be watching him.

His plump lips, coated with a faint tint of red and then gloss on top of that, curved into a smile as he looked up to me. “Am I doing good, Daddy? You are so trapped into fucking me now. I bet you thought I’d cave, didn’t you? Too late; I’m in.” His grin grew. “Well…it’s in.”

Daddy? I fucking liked it. I probably shouldn’t, but I did.

“You’re doing okay, beautiful boy,” I answered with a grin of my own, knowing he was doing much better than good.

Fuck…I could fall in love with him. To be honest, I was probably already several steps down that particular path. It should scare the shit out of me.

It didn’t.

“How long do we have before you have to be there?”

He frowned. “I don’t know; I usually head straight over, but I’m always waiting on the others to show up. You need to do something before we go?”

“Yeah…yeah, I do. Follow me,” I ordered and then grabbed his upper arm to help keep him as close to me as possible. I maneuvered through the crowd of models, handlers, and makeup artists and led him to the nearest restroom.

As I reached for the door handle, Micah barked out a laugh and pulled his arm away from mine. Frowning down at him, I asked, “What’s so funny and why are you trying to get away?”

“First of all, I’m not trying to get away. Second, I’m laughing at you.”

“Why are you laughing at me?” I asked. As far as I knew, I hadn’t done that much to stand out from the mass of people. I had on the expensive suit that had been sewn to fit me perfectly. Sure, I was larger than everybody in the room, but it was solid muscle. I couldn’t help it if most of them were built like elves.

“Because I’m all nervous around you, thinking I’m not good enough, not perfect enough, and you have to rush away from my fitting to take a shit. I like it; it makes you more human.” He reached down and pulled the door open. “It’s probably all those pancakes. I told you it was rude to eat them in front of me. Again. But, naturally, you did it anyway. I call that karma, baby!”
