She goes back to change, and I take time to build the courage to ask, “Do you still sleep with him?”

She pops her head out. “Would it upset you if I said yes?”

“No. I am just curious.”

She smiles. “If you say so. But you’re in luck. Since you’ve been in the picture, I don’t think he’s slept with anyone. Which is so unlike him.”

“What do you mean?”

She returns, this time dressed in a slightly longer skirt that hides her panties and a lace shirt. It’s short but looks phenomenal on her. Quite honestly, anything she wears would.

Daphne assesses herself in the mirror, running her hands over the material again. “We had a schedule. Sometimes it would be sporadic, but I usually knew when he’d want me.”

“And did you enjoy it?”

She chokes out a laugh. “Dawson is the best fuck I have ever had. Plus, he’s a decent man.”

“He is, huh?” I say.

Daphne steps back into the change room after I give her the thumbs up. It isn’t long until she walks back out, and her phone starts ringing.

“Daphne, you have a call,” I tell her.

“Could you answer it? I won’t be long.” Okay, that’s weird and kind of awkward, but I lift her phone to my ear. “Hello.”

“This isn’t Daphne.” His voice is like butter, smooth and silky.

“Um, no, she’ll just be a second,” I tell the man.

“Honey?”

“Dawson?”

“Yes,” he answers. “Why are you with Daphne?”

“She wanted help finding clothes.”

“You two are shopping together? It doesn’t bother you that I’ve fucked her?” he asks.

“Should it?”

He doesn’t seem to have an answer to that. Being in the line of business he is, I doubt jealousy is a thing. So does he think it would bother me because I’m not in that business?

“How was your date? I hope he at least made you come… hard. That’s what I intended to do.”

That’s one way to change the subject.

“Would it bother you if I said yes?” I ask, repeating Daphne’s earlier question.

“Yes. I may very well find him and… kill him.”

“That’s a joke, right?” He stays quiet on the other end, not answering me. “But, no, he broke it off with me, actually. I have to talk to you about that.”

“Good. You can do better anyway. And why? What did he do to you?” I can hear the feral edge to his tone. I look back to the change room.

Maybe Daphne wasn’t lying.

Maybe I mean something to Dawson.

Or maybe it’s sheer sexual curiosity.

“Because he knew what I did the week before.”

“What did you do?” he teases.

“How I lost my virginity. He knew,” I tell Dawson. The line goes quiet, and I hear the tapping of a keyboard before he speaks again, “Don’t associate yourself with him again,” he declares, then hangs up.

I stand there, shocked that he just hung up on me. And what was that supposed to mean, Dawson telling me not to associate with Kit?

“I’m going to get both.” Daphne comes out with a smile. “I mean, if he’s great on the first date, I plan to get some action on the second at least.” She winks, then looks at the phone still clutched in my hand. She takes it, says a few hellos, and then looks at me, confused.

You and me both, girl.

You and me both.

“Who was that?”

“Dawson,” I tell her.

She laughs as she walks to the register. “Speak, and the devil shall appear.”

If only she knew what the conversation was about.

“Is Dawson a dangerous man?” I ask.

This grabs her attention. “I mean…” She thinks about it briefly before continuing, “Not to those he cares about, which is very few. But yes, he is. He’s even involved with the mafia and stuff.” She whispers the last part. I want to roll my eyes. If only she knew that ‘said mafia’ is also my sister’s husband and my father, mafia men surround me.

She pays for her clothes, and we leave. Fuck, I hope Dawson doesn’t kill Kit because that’s the only conclusion someone like Crue or my father would come to, being the dangerous men they are.

“Are you still free? Do you want to come back to my place to help me with my hair? Your hair is perfect, I want mine the same.” She touches my curls, which I added the night before.

“I actually have to get back home,” I reply quickly. I have to try to get ahold of Dawson. But I know there is never any way to tell a powerful man that killing isn’t okay.

She holds out her hand. “Give me your phone.” I hand her my phone, and she types in something, then her phone starts ringing. “Okay, I’ll let you know how my date goes. Thanks again for your help.” She leans in and kisses me on the lips.

On. The. Lips!

I’m startled at first.

What is she doing?

But she simply smiles before she turns and saunters off.
