Kelly just burst out laughing like she thought the entire thing was some kind of funny joke. It didn’t improve my mood at all. I could feel my body growing hotter and hotter as rage flooded me.

“Griff, you don’t have to pretend anymore,” she said, “I know your relationship with Remy is all fake. I’ve known for quite a while now, but it was rather fun seeing the two of you doing your best to pretend for me.” She laughed again. “I’m not sure how you honestly thought it would work. It didn’t take much digging at all to figure out that nobody else was clued in on your little relationship before I showed up. Besides, everyone said that you and Remy had barely ever spent any time together outside of work. When you put two and two together, it doesn’t take a genius, does it?”

She paused for a moment and I tried to say something, but I wasn’t sure what. This was the end of the line for me – for us – and I was going to lose my job anyway. After all our hard work, it had all been for nothing.

“It seems to me that you thought you could save your job by pretending to date your secretary,” Kelly continued with her eyes narrowed as she assessed my reaction. “But there’s no way you’re actually satisfied dating that mousey little nobody, right? So, you don’t need to keep the act up anymore. I’ll make sure you keep your job.”

Those words had me feeling hopeful for a moment before I remembered the situation and what a conniving piece of work Kelly was. “In exchange for what? Fucking you?” I questioned.

“Well, of course, as a bonus you get to have incredible, pleasurable sex with me,” she replied like it was just another component of a job contract.

I couldn’t believe the audacity of it all, but I knew one thing for certain: If this is what the Anderson Group’s true colors were, I wanted nothing to do with it.

“Get out, now!” I roared at her as I reached for her coat and her bag on the floor. “Get out and don’t come back.” I shoved her belongings at her and then grabbed her arm before practically throwing her out of the room. “You can keep your sex and you can keep your damn job. I’m not playing this stupid game anymore.”

Before she even had a chance to respond, I slammed the door in her face and turned to face the other way. I’d never wanted to punch someone more in my life, but I was glad I didn’t. I never wanted to resort to violence like my father. Instead, I let out an angry scream before reaching for my phone in my pocket. I knew exactly who I wanted to call.

“Griff?” Remy answered. “Is everything okay?”

“No, no it’s not,” I growled. “Kelly just fucking turned up in our hotel room in her underwear!”

“What?! You’re kidding!”

“I wish I was, Remy.” I sighed. “She tried to seduce me, so I quit. I’ve decided to go to Boston.”

“Oh... Really?”

“Yeah, I’m sorry for all the chaos I’ve caused in your life because of this Remy. I wish I could take it back now.”

“It’s okay, Griff, honestly,” she told me in that soft voice of hers. “You’ve made the right choice, okay? Now, go to Boston and if you need me, just give me a call and I’ll be on the next train down.”

Hearing those words filled me with relief and I could feel the anger seeping out of my body finally. “Thank you so much, Remy. You have no idea how much your support means to me.”

“Anytime, Griff.”

I hung up then and began to gather my things. I needed to get a train ticket and I needed it fast.

Remy

Once Griff hung up, I could barely contain my rage. I mean, I was glad that Griff had finally decided to visit his father, but I was angry that Kelly had done something so heinous to cause him to leave. I mean, how could she just turn up in our hotel room in her underwear? What a slut, I thought to myself with a sneer. I knew I’d never liked her and now, I’d been proven right.

Around me, shoppers were milling and picking up items to look at from their shelves. Nearby, a clerk was restocking a shelf. Life was going on as normal around me, but I felt anything but normal. Right then, I wanted to scream, pick up the biggest thing I could find, and smash it on the floor. But I wasn’t a violent person. No, instead, I usually kept my mouth shut and tried to keep the peace. Well, not this time. Kelly had messed with the wrong pregnant lady!

My heart was thundering in my chest and I clenched my hand tight around my phone with a groan. I felt like a complete idiot stood here in the homeware aisle of a local department store looking through the items Kelly had listed for me. Here I was completing her stupid errand for her out of the goodness of my own heart while she was trying to get my man to sleep with her. Well, he wasn’t really my man, but as far as she knew, he was. Then an awful thought came to me: Had she sent me away just so she could try and seduce Griff? What kind of evil person did that to another woman?
