That wasn’t an option in his mind. They had a connection. A solid one he’d felt from the first time he’d seen her. She’d melted a piece of him when she’d smiled. He loved the way she blushed when he was around. He got the feeling she only did so in front of him, and to be honest, he loved the idea.

Wyatt climbed out of his car, smoothing his hands on his thighs as he started walking. He’d parked behind Lark’s car in front of the house, but there was one other car in the driveway. He suspected it was a potential buyer.

When he stepped inside the empty home, the door chimed, and Lark’s voice floated down from upstairs. “I’ll be right down. Please feel free to look around.”

He smiled. Even her voice made his heart beat faster. He wandered toward the kitchen, noting her perfectly organized business cards with flyers about the house stacked next to them. There was also a sign-in sheet, but he didn’t use it.

While he waited, he wandered into the laundry room, noting that the shelf was back in its right spot. Two screws had been added to the brackets underneath on both ends, securing the shelf from another collapse.

A pang of jealously crawled up his spine as he wondered who had come to the house this morning to fix the shelf. Was there another man in Lark’s life?

The thought made Wyatt stop dead in his tracks. Maybe she had a boyfriend. He’d been so wrapped up in the idea of figuring out how to get her to see him that he’d never stopped to consider perhaps she was already in a relationship.

Duh. He practically slapped his forehead. Of course. That was the most logical explanation. After all, Lark was a beautiful woman with a sparkling personality, an amazing smile, deep blue mesmerizing eyes, and gorgeous thick dark hair that hung halfway down her back.

Suddenly, his plans for this afternoon seemed absurd. His hands were sweating again, and his throat was dry. When he heard a noise behind him, he spun around quickly. He’d been so caught up in his thoughts he hadn’t heard her approaching.

And there she was. Damn, she was sexy. Even sexier today. She was incredibly professional in a tight grey pencil skirt, white blouse, and black heels. The blouse was modest enough, but there was a hint of her white lace bra underneath.

“Wyatt?” Her eyes widened in surprise and her expression—which had been a fixed huge smile—faltered.

“Hey.” He tried to sound casual as he glanced past her. “Did your prospective buyer leave?”

“Yeah. They decided the house was bigger than what they were looking for.” She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, making him wish he could do it for her. “What are you doing here?”

Wyatt cleared his throat. “Do you have a boyfriend?” He kind of wanted to suck those words back into his mouth as soon as they slid out, but that was the most pressing question in his mind.

She stared at him a moment and then shook her head. “No. Why?”

He blew out a long breath, relieved. “Because that would seriously get in the way of my plans for this afternoon.”

She tipped her head to one side, brows drawn together in confusion. “What plans?”

“I was hoping you would go out with me.”

She blinked several times. “Go out with you?”

“Yes.” He smiled. “I’m asking you out on a date.”

“Now?” She glanced around.

“Yes. Your open house is over at two, right?”

“Well, yes, but…”

“Did you have other plans for today?” he pressed.

She licked her lips. “No, but…”

“Then go out with me. I promise you’ll have a great time.”

She gave him a slight grin. “Do you always ask your dates out for that very minute instead of setting up a time in the future?”

Relieved that she hadn’t shot him down, he finally breathed easier and grinned back. “Nope. You’re the first. Say yes.”

She chuckled. Another good sign. “Why not call me like a regular person and ask me out for next weekend?”

“Would you have said yes?”

She scrunched up her face. “Probably not.”

“There’s your answer.” He stepped closer and reached for her hand, grateful that she let him. “Don’t overthink it. Just spend the day with me.”

She glanced down at her clothes. “I’m overdressed though.”

He was wearing a nice pair of jeans, a button down, and loafers. “I think you look perfect, but if you want to change, I’ll follow you to your house. Then we can leave your car.”

“You have this all planned out.”

“Yes.” He stepped closer and, unable to stop himself, reached up and tucked that errant lock of hair behind her ear again. “Go out with me,” he said, softer this time.

“You’re very persistent.”

“Indeed.”

“Okay.”

Yes. Thank you, God.

“I need to close things up here first. Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”
