See, simple?

Only . . .

“You want to stay?”

“You haven’t got any food.”

Huh? Why was he talking about her food?

“I don’t?” She opened the fridge door. “Sure, I do. There’s pizza in here. Oh, are you hungry? I could heat it up. Least I could do considering the whole rescuing me thing. And, you know, nipple-gate.”

“Nipple-gate?”

“Uh-huh. Nipple-gate. So, pizza?”

“Baby, I’m not eating that pizza and neither are you. It’s a science experiment now.”

“It is not!” she protested. Although when had she bought it? Hmm, perhaps if she couldn’t remember how old it was, it was too old to eat.

“Gonna go and get some food for breakfast,” he told her.

What?

No, she couldn’t let him do that.

“I don’t need breakfast. I’m fine. In fact, I’m not even hungry. Big dinner last night.” She rubbed her empty tummy.

It’s okay, tummy. I’ll feed you cupcakes.

Wait. Shit.

“Crap! I don’t have any eggs! This is a total disaster!”

“You don’t have anything,” he pointed out.

“Yes, but other things don’t matter. I need eggs to make cupcakes. Shit! Loki was supposed to get them for me.” She chewed her lip. What was she going to do?

“Then I’ll shower, and we’ll go get breakfast and eggs.”

“I don’t have time! I have to bake two hundred cupcakes, package them up and get them to Kiesha by five.”

He gaped at her. “What?”

“This is a disaster!” She tugged at her hair. “I’m never going to be able to do this! This is all Shawn’s fault.”

“Who is Shawn?”

“My asshole boss. If he hadn’t made me stay late at work, I would have realized I didn’t have eggs last night and bought some. And I probably wouldn’t have nearly been run off the road by some asshole and then slept in.”

“It’s only eight.”

“I was meant to get up at five!” she wailed. “And now I’ve got to go battle the she-demon from hell and her sisters because I need eggs.”

He rubbed at his temple, looking confused. “Can’t you get them from the grocery store?”

“They’ll know,” she said in a whisper as she looked around nervously. “They always know. Once, I bought an omelet from the diner and brought it home to eat. And Jennifer kept me up all night with her noise. I had to go out there and freaking apologize.”

“Jennifer?”

“The she-demon! She’s a bully. So mean. Another time, I bought some eggs when Loki wasn’t here, and when I woke up in the morning . . . she was in the house.”

“In the house? There was someone in the house?”

“Not someone! Jennifer! And she pooped on my clothes. Can you believe that?”

His eyes were wide. “Wait. Is Jennifer a person . . . or . . .”

“Ew, no. Sheesh. That would be disgusting. Jennifer is a chicken.”

“Because that makes much more sense,” he muttered.

She nodded. “And normally, Loki would get the eggs for me. The she-demon and her sisters love him. They hate me. But if I bring eggs home, they’ll hate me even more. Honestly, it’s a vicious cycle. I don’t know what I’m going to do.” She slumped on a stool at the kitchen island. “I guess I could go bake at Kiesha’s house. But I don’t know how to work her oven. I have everything here I need. Stupid Jennifer,” she whispered the last sentence. Because, you know, wouldn’t want the she-demon to hear her.

Remy cleared his throat. “What if I try to get the eggs?”

Her first instinct was to say no. It was the polite thing to do. He’d done enough for her, after all.

But . . . she was kind of desperate. And it might just work.

“What if she hates you, though? She can be vicious.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“I mean really vicious.”

“I can handle it. Where’s the chicken coop?”

“Uh, it’s out the back.” She gestured to the back door. “Just follow the sound of she-demons.”

He raised his eyebrows. “What does a she-demon sound like?”

“Surprisingly, like a chicken,” she muttered.

Then her heart stopped, literally stopped as he smiled. It was like the sun coming out from behind clouds.

Damn. That was beautiful.

“I walked straight into that,” he said.

She had to grin. He really had.

“Do you want a weapon? I mean, I think that will backfire, but it might help save you if they go for you.”

“I think I can handle a few chickens, baby,” he told her.

“I hope so. Just if they rush at you, protect your balls.”

He gaped at her. “What?”

“They like to attack your crotch. Mass attack on your balls . . . it isn’t pretty.”

She was fairly sure she saw him gulp and she couldn’t hold back her giggles.

“You little brat. You’re teasing me.”

“Of course I am. You should see your face. You look so worried.”

“You’re the one that should be worried, brat,” he grumbled. “I’m keeping track of this and one day, you’ll pay the piper.”

Ooh, she was so scared.
