“Ugh. I guess he has to come if Soren will. Hey, do you think if we wish hard enough, they’ll break up before then?”
“Or we could not invite them.”
“Ollie won’t like that. He and Soren are tight.”
“Yeah, but are we really tight with Soren? He hangs out with us, but it’s not like we really know him all that well.”
It’s true. We hang out all the time, but Soren always seems to be more reserved and hangs out in the background a lot. I don’t know what’s up with that, but it might have to do with his boyfriend being a pretentious twat.
“We’ll invite them,” I say. “If I happen to throw Bryce off the flight somewhere over the Pacific, we’ll all call it an accident.”
Matt leans in and kisses my cheek. “I love it when you get all homicidal.”
“Only for you.”
He tries to pull away, but I grab the back of his neck and bring his lips back to mine.
After kissing him senseless until neither of us can breathe, I pull back with pure hopefulness in my eyes. “So we’re doing it?”
“Fine. Invite everyone. Chances are they can’t drop everything eight weeks out anyway and won’t come.”
My inner evil person is laughing right now, because I’m going to make it happen.
Chapter Nine
MATT
“This trip is going to be epic,” Noah says from the doorway to our bedroom.
I’m putting the last of my shit in my duffle bag, while Noah’s expensive luggage is neatly in a pile by the door.
We still have our poor-guy-rich-guy things that remind us we’re so ridiculously different, but instead of seeing that as a bad thing like we did in the beginning, it’s amusing to us now.
I’ve never seen him so excited than he is over this trip to Fiji. He kinda reminds me of Jet with his hyperactive, can’t sit still, and talks a million miles a minute charisma he’s got going on right now.
It’s adorable.
“Wrangling everyone was a feat,” I say. “Five athletes, one of the busiest sports agents in New York, and … well, okay, you, Maddox, and Lennon aren’t important people, so it wasn’t that hard to organize you guys.”
Even my jab can’t bring him down.
“Thanks. Just for that, you can fly commercial.” Noah’s all attitude and gorgeousness.
“You have the worst punishments ever. It’s not ‘You can’t go to Fiji.’ It’s ‘You have to fly first-class … but commercially.’ You’re going to make a mean daddy.”
Noah winces. “Please don’t say mean daddy ever again. It does weird things to my brain that I’m not quite sure if I should be disgusted or turned on? Also, you do realize this is our last vacation as childless parents?”
“Soo, as … people? Is a childless parent like one of those tree falling in the woods analogies?”
He playfully shoves me. “You know what I mean.”
Yeah, only because he’s mentioned it like a billion times.
“I wish Jet could come with us,” I say. He was the only one who couldn’t come. Well, and Bryce now.
I do not want to be there when karma comes and bites Noah in the ass, because when we’d invited Soren and his boyfriend, and they said yes, my husband decided to start wishing and hoping for their relationship to fall apart. And it did. About two weeks after they agreed to come with us.
There’s a good chance Noah might actually control the universe, but I’m so not telling him I think that. His head is big enough as it is.
Noah wraps his arms around me from behind. “With how many times you called him about it, if Jet could make the trip, he would.”
“I know.”
That doesn’t stop me from missing Jet. I know it’s horrible for me to think, but I often wish he wasn’t killing it. His band has had some number one singles and a decent-selling album, so it’s crazy busy for him at the moment.
His tour still has three months to go before he gets to come home, and by then, we’ll be back in Chicago for football season … and forever this time. I’m sure we’ll come back to New York when Wade’s on summer break, but it won’t be the same.
A phone starts vibrating on the bedside table. “That better not be any of the guys canceling or I’m going to be pissed,” Noah says.
“Why’s it so important for all of them to be there?”
“Last hurrah.” Noah’s tone drips with duh. “Or if I’m speaking jock, think of this as your final play of the game. Everyone should be there for it.”
I never thought I’d see the day where Noah—snobby, cares about no one else but himself Noah—would be choosing to spend his last vacation as a childless parent, as he puts it, with a group of guys. They’re the best guys in the world, there’s no doubt about that, but even though Noah has always been surrounded by people, he’s always been a bit of a lone wolf.
