Either no one heard me or they’re all ignoring me because the men keep walking.
Chasing after Nathaniel, I have to take a couple of deep breaths before I can shout, “I’ll drive!”
Nathaniel stops and gives me a scowl.
James glances over his shoulder but doesn’t stop limping away. “No! Go back to the safe room!”
It would be easy to do as he says. To tell myself I tried and head back to safety.
What will be, will be.
But Jude needs me.
Meredith and Beth don’t even know me but they helped me. Helped Abel.
Fuck, James himself risked his life.
This is the least I can do.
“No. I’m going to drive,” I say more firmly. “Give me the keys.”
James stops limping and turns to face me. He gives me the darkest, meanest glare I’ve ever seen. “Fuck no. It’s too fucking dangerous. You need to stay with your baby.”
I fight the urge to wilt under his glare and turn my focus to Nathaniel. Hoping he’s more likely to agree. “If I drive, will you be able to save Gabriel?”
“Yes,” Nathaniel confirms with some hesitation. “But like James said, it’s too dangerous. You should go be with Abel.”
I shake my head. “Sonya is watching Abel. I’m not going to fight. I’ll just drive and drop you guys off, like an Uber.”
“An Uber?” James laughs and shakes his head in disbelief.
Almost to the lone SUV that isn’t fucked up in the middle of the street, Gabriel suddenly turns around.
Storming back to us with a mean, angry look, he roars, “We’re wasting fucking time!”
I didn’t wilt under James’s glare but Gabriel’s roar almost makes me pee myself.
The man is fucking terrifying when he’s angry.
“Yes, I agree,” James says just before Gabriel reaches him.
“I’m glad you agree,” Gabriel rumbles then he slightly bends and grabs James, lifting him off his feet.
“What the fuck!” James shouts as Gabriel hefts him up and turns back around. Carrying him like one might carry a defiant toddler.
“Let’s fucking go!” Gabriel orders.
Snapping my jaw shut, I rush forward to catch up.
“Put me down!” James demands, trying to squirm out of Gabriel’s hold. “Fuck!”
“No,” Gabriel growls. “You’re too fucking slow.”
“I should fucking punch you. This is fucking embarrassing,” James whines, bouncing in Gabriel’s hold.
“Not as embarrassing as me leaving you behind with the women,” Gabriel replies.
“You can’t leave me,” James says defiantly. “You need my rifle and my eyes.”
Gabriel snorts. “Then stop your fucking whining.”
Unable to free himself from Gabriel’s hold, James seems to just give up. His body relaxing in defeat.
Then he narrows his eyes over Gabriel’s big shoulder and glares back at Nathaniel and me. “If either of you tell anyone about this…”
Smirking, Nathaniel says, “My lips are sealed.”
Gabriel hauls James all the way up to the front passenger door of the SUV and drops him to his feet.
James cringes and bounces a little from foot to foot. “Shit! That hurt!”
Pulling a set of keys out of his pocket, Nathaniel pushes a couple of buttons on a black fob. The car starts up then the back hatch pops open.
Without warning he tosses the keys to me, and I scramble to catch them. “Try to keep it as smooth as possible.”
Snatching the keys out of the air, I nod at him then run up to the driver’s side.
My heart racing, I yank open the door and slide inside.
Unfortunately, the seat is so far back my feet don’t reach the pedals.
While I figure out how to adjust the seat, Nathaniel slams the hatch shut and tells Gabriel to, “Stretch out in the backseat.”
Gabriel grins at Nathaniel as he climbs inside. “You going to buy me dinner first, Doc? I don’t usually do this on the first date.”
“You should be buying me dinner, the way you manhandled me,” James grumbles as he slides into the seat beside me.
“Why? That was nothing. That was only foreplay,” Gabriel says with a straight face.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” James groans and sinks back in his seat.
Nathaniel climbs in, wedging himself behind the backseat and James’s seat.
Once his door is shut, I take it as my cue to get moving.
Sucking in a deep breath to calm my nerves, I set my gun down in the console beside me and press my foot against the brake.
Thank god the car is an automatic.
My hands shaking, palm sweaty, I grab the shifter and move it into drive.
Lifting my foot from the brake, I push down on the gas.
The car moves forward so fast it freaks me out, so I slam on the brake.
We jolt to a sudden hard stop.
The car fills with curses.
“Jesus!”
“Fuck!”
“Shit!”
I cringe in embarrassment. “Sorry.”
It was a total rookie mistake.
James looks over at me with wide eyes. “You do know how to drive, don’t you?”
Knowing they’ll kick me out of the car and Gabriel will die if I tell the truth, the lie easily slips through my lips. “Of course, I know how to drive.”
