But there’s a man near her stupidly showing his head.

I snap off a shot that goes directly through his skull.

Firing the rest of my clip into anything that looks like a moving body, I have to duck back down as soon as I see an assault rifle angling over the hood of a car.

“It’s her,” I growl, and I swear the pain in my shoulder from when I got shot throbs so sharply it takes all thought from me.

“That was one, Jude,” she yells, “but we are many!”

“And I’m betting there’s many men who have used your mom’s clammy twat!” Johnathan shouts back to her.

A loud chorus of laughter comes from our little band of devils.

But it’s false bravado, and we all know it.

Our wives and children are at home, under attack.

How the fuck are we supposed to even focus on the here and now? Especially when we can’t be there for them?

Each of us knows that it’s entirely possible we don’t all make it back home.

And each of us has the same look in our eyes....

Viscerally haunted.

If they can attack our wives… How can we ever know peace?

Coldness or rage has seeped into the features of all my brothers, with fear mixed in there for good measure.

Fear.

It’s terrifying, and mind control of the worst kind.

Because fear can control you. It can force you to make a mistake.

But fear can also be used to grease the wheels of fury.

“Very humorous,” she yells. “You will not be laughing for long!”

“I disagree,” I shout. “When I shot your sister, I laughed for a very long time. I’ll be sure to laugh when you’re dead as well!”

Johnathan shakes his head at me when we hear a scream of anger.

“You pissed her off,” he says.

“Help me get the two bodies from the back,” I say to Johnathan before I look to Lucifer. “We need to fortify as much as we can and be ready to take any opportunity we get.”

Crouched down low and moving through the long hallway leading back to the ‘guest’ room, I look back at Johnathan.

Frowning, I say, “Soon enough we’re going to be fighting with knives and whatever metal we can pry off the machinery to make as a weapon.”

Johnathan sighs. “Definitely an oversight leaving this place without a cache of weapons.”

Once we reach the room where we’ve secured the Russian and Eden’s uncle, I walk over to the two men and pull my switchblade from my pocket.

“We kill them and there goes any bargaining chips we might have,” Johnathan points out.

“We don’t have any chips with these two, they were pawns,” I say and slice the Russian’s throat.

Hot blood streams from the wound as he thrashes around in his chair for a moment before going still.

“True enough,” Johnathan agrees. “I got dibs on this one. He looks like an old asshole commander I had back in the Legion.”

Moving up to Eden’s uncle, I snap my fingers in his face to get his attention. “It’s a shame your ass is going to fucking die before you could tell my wife the truth. You know you murdered her father. But your death is going to serve a greater purpose than you living would.”

Backing out of the way, I say, “All yours.”

“You know,” Johnathan says to me over another burst of gunfire coming from the front of the building, his hands wrapping tightly around Eden’s uncle’s throat. “These two fucks will provide pretty good meat shields.”

Looking at the dead Russian and the fat sack of shit who’s trying to pull his neck from Johnathan’s hands, I say, “I call his body. I’m going through that window over there the first chance I get and I’m going to hurt them all.”

Nodding his head, Johnathan flexes his arms as his hands become a true vice grip of death. It’s not a quick deal to strangle someone to death, but with his fingers crushing the man’s throat, it doesn’t take nearly long enough in my opinion.

More gunshots ring out from the front of the warehouse, but it sounds like it’s our guys shooting this time.

“We’ve got cover!” Andrew shouts, and I can hear metal sliding across the floors and even more gunfire erupting.

“Uriel and Amanda?” I ask Johnathan.

“Has to be. I doubt the others are going to get here as quick,” he says then removes his hands from the dead man’s throat.

I quickly remove Mickey’s bindings from the chair and sling him up over my shoulder.

Johnathan is a step behind me and grabs my shoulder. “Wait a second. Let me tell the others what our plan is. I’ll head towards the front when we get out, you sweep around.”

Nodding my head, I stand in place, shaking ever so slightly with rage as I finally allow the little voices to slowly take over my vision.

I don’t hear his words when Johnathan returns, only a white buzzing noise, but the lizard part of my brain understands it’s time to move.
