I sit down in an empty chair. “Coss said that Daniel’s nephew is a big player in the Bratva and they’ve made a new alliance with the Yakuza.”

Now there really is a dead silence when all eyes turn to me again. That’s bomb number one being dropped, might as well drop the second.

“He’s also suggested we make reparations with the Russians. He wants us apologize for the our past sins. He wants peace and for us to simply let the Russians back in.”

“He wants, what?” Simon asks quietly, and for the first time in a very long time I see that dead coldness that used to fill his whole body before he found his wife.

“He wants us to surrender,” I say then look to see Lucifer’s reaction. “We should make things right. We should talk to them and fix things.”

Lucifer says nothing for a long time, but I know him. I know him like few do. I know him because I remember the things I did for him after he put his father in the ground. I laid the groundwork for the power we have today.

I remember what he had me do in Japan.

Lucifer’s hand, I’ve always been, and I’ve been the one to do the dark things.

“Table him for now,” Lucifer finally says to us all. He looks directly at Simon. “What of this Daniel Raskatov and his nephew?”

“I’m searching them now. I have a file on Daniel but it’s not much. He was a mover and shaker back before he had a parting of ways. How he got out, I’m not sure, but if his nephew is a boss, I’ll need to do a much deeper dive on them both,” Simon answers.

“Do it quickly,” Lucifer orders. “I have a feeling this is a piece of the puzzle we’ve been missing. Especially if this nephew has brought the Yakuza onto their side.”

“We’ll also need to know if it’s just one family of the Yakuza or if it’s multiple coming together,” I interject. “We can’t just go in blind, thinking it’s just one.”

“Agreed,” Simon says then motions to Andrew. “Your turn.”

Moving around in his seat to get more comfortable, Andrew smiles. “On a good note, we’ve got Eden’s uncle in our hands and a Russian to go with him.”

“What?” I ask in surprise. “How?”

“Uriel and Nathaniel lucked out,” Andrew says with an even bigger smile. “The Russian was leaving the uncle’s business right as they were getting out of the car. If the fucker didn’t have Russian knuckle tattoos, they wouldn’t have thought twice about him. They went with their guts and yanked him into the building. They checked him out and figured we’d be better off asking some questions. They’re all on their way to the warehouse.”

I look around the room and it’s full of smiles. “Good news, then.”

Inside I can feel those little voices cracking their knuckles. They’ll get to come out and play soon.

Standing up from his desk, Lucifer stretches his arms out before picking up his suit coat and slipping it on.

He’s ready to do dirty little things, too. I can feel it in the room.

We all are.

We’re almost like caged lions finally being let out to play.

“Have James meet us there,” Lucifer says and motions to me. “You’ll ride with us. I want to speak to you more about Coss.”

Nodding my head, I look over to Johnathan. “Guess we don’t get to ride our bikes there.”

“Shit,” Johnathan grunts. “You never get to come out to play anymore. Dad’s always picking on us.”

Rolling his eyes, Simon steps past us. “It’s uncouth to ride in a suit, anyways.”

“Bite your tongue.” Johnathan laughs as he pokes Simon in the shoulder. “You keep using the big words and I’m buying Lucifer his first hog.”

Lucifer’s eyes go wide with a bright smile. “Now there’s an interesting idea.”

“I’ll tell Lily,” Simon smugly says before leaving the office.

Lucifer smiles at Johnathan. “Remind me later to leave a thumbtack on his chair.”

The levity from the office disperses like vampires in the light of day as soon as we get down to the garage.

But I still feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on edge. It’s like a malevolent force is watching over us, and I just can’t figure out where it’s coming from.

Putting my hand on my Glock doesn’t ease the feeling at all.

While we watch Thaddeus pull the SUV up to meet us, Simon takes me by the arm and pulls me back from the group.

“What is it?” Simon asks and looks down to where my hand is.

“I feel like someone’s been dancing a merry little jig on my grave for the last hour,” I say and look around the garage where not a single car or motorcycle is out of place.

Following my sweeping gaze, Simon nods his head. “I’ve been feeling it, too. I can’t place it, but Lucifer says it’s the battle fatigue setting in.”
