“How do you mean?” I ask, even though I know damn well how she means.

“Oh, well he was seeing a married woman and we kind of ... I don’t know, started a thing and then everything just went really bad. It’s a long story, and I got pregnant, and he stopped seeing the married woman. He did love her, though, so I can’t help but wonder if he’s not fully over it.”

He loved her?

Becky.

Ugh, why? If he knew what she was really like, he wouldn’t. She can put on a good show, but my dear sister is as cold and heartless as they come.

I feel bad for saying that sometimes, because maybe I just never gave her a chance. In our family, things don’t always go the way you want them to. You have dreams of having this incredible sister and being close, but it just wasn’t how it went down. I wonder if things were different, if we’d get along, but I find it so hard to even picture a world where that would happen.

I don’t know that Becky will ever look at me without hate and disgust. I’m not the sister she ordered, if I were, we’d be fine. I don’t like the richer things in life, I don’t care about our father’s business and money means nothing to do me. For her, those things are her world and I’m sure she’d love a sister she could do her nails with and talk about the latest handbags.

That sister ain’t me, I’m afraid.

“I mean, it’s probably going to take time,” Ramona says carefully. “Feelings don’t just turn off, but, in saying that, he made a choice and I’m certain he’s confident with that choice.”

“I wonder if I wasn’t pregnant, if he’d still have made the choice, though,” Poppy murmurs.

I feel bad for her, that would be a crappy situation to be in because you’d be constantly wondering if you didn’t have a baby growing inside you, if that man would still be there? I see the way Beckett looks at Poppy and there is no doubt he’s into her, but apparently he was in love with Becky, and Poppy is right, can you just switch that off?

I don’t know, I’ve never been in love so I couldn’t tell you.

“I’m sure he cares about you,” I say, giving her a warm smile. “How could he not? Look at you, you’re so fucking beautiful.”

She grins. “Says she, have you looked in the mirror lately?”

“Right?” Ramona nods. “Girl, you’re the most attractive woman I’ve seen in forever.”

“Gotta agree.” Eve nods. “You’re smokin’, Gabby. You’ve got to have men lining up.”

I snort. “They do until I open my mouth; I’m afraid I’m very forward and not too many like that.”

“I like strong willed.” Poppy winks. “It keeps them on their toes.”

“Speaking of ...” I look up. “This’ll keep them on their toes, too.”

“Oh, hell yes it will.” Eve grins. “Let’s get out of here so we don’t get busted. Riggs will be wondering where the hell I am soon. I said I was drinking with Ramona but he knows I won’t be out late.”

“I’ll be in early tomorrow,” I tell them. “I’ll let you know how it goes.”

This should be fun.

Oh, yes.

It’s going to be a blast.

“WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. Fuck.”

I press a hand to my mouth as I watch Remy stand in the garage, his eyes on the ceiling, the other guys all beside him, looking up. Their faces are the best thing I’ve seen and my god, I wish I could pull my phone out and record them, but I’m certain it wouldn’t go down well. I smother a laugh and keep my hand pressed to my lips as Remy turns, his eyes on me. “Care to fuckin’ explain?”

I look up, and then burst out laughing. It takes me a minute to compose myself, but when I do I look him dead in the eye with a grin that tells him I’m not to be messed with. “I told you, I can play just as hard.”

“How the fuck did you get all our tools up there?” Hank asks, looking almost a little impressed.

“With great difficulty, and help.”

“One of your helpers didn’t happen to be a pregnant little hottie with a big mouth, did it?” Beckett asks.

I snort. “Never met someone fitting that description, sorry.”

He grunts. “Bullshit.”

“You’re goin’ to get every fuckin’ one of them down, now,” Remy orders. “We got work to do and fuckin’ a lot of it.”

I walk to my corner and roll my tool set out. “Nope,” I say, wheeling it over to the one car that has to be done before opening. “I’ve got everything I need to get the job done, I guess I’m getting employee of the month this time ‘round, yeah?”

“Fuckin’ ...” Remy growls.

I grin at him. “Maybe you’ll think twice about treating me the way you did yesterday. Better get to it, boys, the customers will be here soon.”
