“Did you feel that?” he asked.

“Yes.”

She had gotten angry even though she had no reason to be angry.

“Something isn’t right.”

Leah lifted her palms.

“What the fuck have I told you?” Killian asked, growling.

“Back down, Wolfboy!” she said, yelling at him. “You told me I could use my magic, remember.”

Killian’s hands were clenched into fists.

She lifted her hands, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath. After just a few seconds, she knew.

“An angry spell.”

“We’re close,” Killian said.

“Seriously, your super-secret mission took us through a fucking angry spell.” She wanted to slap a hand over her mouth. She never cursed out loud, or at least tried not to. “You do realize that an angry spell is cast to keep unwanted visitors out, or was your wolf brain too slow to comprehend that?”

She was saying stuff she didn’t mean. She didn’t think Killian was stupid.

“It’s a test,” Killian said.

Again, he still had that angry frown to his face, which she found so freaking hot.

“No, moron. It’s not a test, okay? This is designed to see who’s strong enough to get through this barrier, but this is just the first fucking test!” she yelled. “People kill each other, or even themselves during these stupid missions.”

Killian reached out and grabbed her hand and the moment he did, she felt normal again.

“What the hell is happening?” she asked.

“We’re not angry with each other. It’s the spell. There’s always a loophole in spells. A way of defeating them, and you yourself said bad magic is easier and comes with a cost. We’re not fighting. We have no reason to fight.”

“Actually, we have every reason to fight, which is why it’s working on us.” Leah breathed out a sigh. It felt good to be able to think. “For other people, a mission like the one we’ve been on creates animosity. Even if they started their adventure together at peace, things would happen that would allow the angry spell to manifest. You and I have that rejection problem.”

Killian pulled her close.

“It’s going to get worse, Killian.”

“I know, but if we’re together, it will be fine.”

Leah loved his optimism. It was nice for him to be the positive one, while she knew everything else that was about to happen to them was going to suck, big time. She didn’t say anything.

They stepped out of the angry spell, and she knew they had because she no longer felt the hatred pressing against her flesh, making her skin crawl. But now, she no longer felt Killian. He wasn’t holding her hand.

“What the fuck?” Leah looked down at her hand and then around her, but Killian wasn’t there. “Killian?” She yelled out for him to hear.

Her heart started to race. This wasn’t good. Okay, so the angry spell was the first line of defense. What was this? Divide and conquer?

“Is that what you’re hoping to do? Separate us so you can kill us off one by one?” Leah took a deep breath. “Killian, I’m fine.” She had no idea how their mating bond worked, or if she even had a chance of getting a message to him.

She moved forward, knowing in her heart they were side by side. They had to be. She hadn’t been called upon. There had been no movement. She had been in the same place, but Killian had disappeared. They were exactly where they were meant to be, but a cloaking wall had been placed, which allowed people to hide within the same room. Even though they were not in a room, but in the forest. The witch or warlock who had cast it was powerful. Yay.

She had no idea what Killian hoped to find or get, but this was dark magic. People who succumbed ended up causing a massive darkness. She had to believe in good.

Leah kept walking, feeling that giant hole in her chest, and then she felt him, and as she turned, he was there. He pulled her into his arms.

“What the ever-loving fuck was that?” he asked.

“It was a cloaking spell.”

“That’s nothing special.”

“To those who aren’t expecting it, it could cause them to kill each other.”

“I felt you,” he said. “Something was telling me to move forward.” He cupped her face. “Were you talking to me?”

“I was trying to. At first, I panicked, but then I figured it out, and hoped our bond could help.”

He stroked her cheek.

She wanted to kiss him and went on her tiptoes to do exactly that, but then something wrapped around her waist, and pulled her up and away from him. Leah screamed. It was vines.

“Killian!”

“I’m coming, Leah.”

She tried to free her hands, but the vines wrapped around her body, trapping her arms to her sides. Closing her eyes, she envisioned a sword, like the one she had seen in some of the texts Lucinda had allowed her to read of past wars.
